Weaver gets six wrestlers through to semifinals, and White Plains gets five in first day of Gene Taylor Memorial. Tallassee leads team standings.

WEAVER — Weaver’s boys lead all area teams after the first day of the Gene Taylor Memorial Tournament on Friday at Weaver.

The Bearcats are fourth with 43.5 points. Defending Class 1A-4A state champion Tallassee leads with 88 points, followed by Ashville (45.5) and Dora (44) to round out the top three.

White Plains is fifth with 29.5 points and Ranburne sixth (25.5). Piedmont (10th, 21.5) and Ohatchee (14th, 14.5) also scored on the first day of the 16-team tournament.

Weaver, which won three state titles and had two runner-up finishes over the past five years, got six wrestlers into weight-class semifinals, which pick up on Saturday: Peyton Andrews (132), Haiden Hise (138), Dylan Brown (165), Gianluca Torres (175), Dalton Fink (190) and Zachary Hooks (215).

White Plains got five through to semifinals: Jack Ledbetter (126), Lyric Brown (138), James Heard (157), Wesley Bebee (165) and Hudson Ingalsbe (285).

Ranburne’s Carter Driver (120) and Jack Yearwood (175) reached semifinals, as did Piedmont’s Myles Bailey (120) and Bentley Chandler (190) and Ohatchee’s Levi Sullins (106) and Maddox Tuiolosega (113).
