BIRMINGHAM — Qua McNeal scored both of Jacksonville’s touchdowns and snagged the clinching interception in overtime, and Jacksonville opened the Class 5A playoffs with a 14-7 victory over ninth-ranked Ramsay at Legion Field on Friday.

The Golden Eagles (6-4) will play host to Fairview in the second round on Nov. 14.

The playoff victory comes in Jeremy Sullivan’s first season as Jacksonville’s head coach. It’s Jacksonville’s first playoff victory as a 5A school since 1999.

The Golden Eagles were Class 4A from 2002-23.

Jacksonville lost the final two games of the regular season, scoring just three points in losses to St. Clair County and Anniston after winning four out of five games in the middle of the season. The Golden Eagles found their best in the playoffs.

“We just talked about, we’ve got to find a way,” Sullivan said. “We’ve got to make it happen, and our kids found a way to make it happen.

“Our defense, I thought they played great last week. They played even better this week.”

Ramsay got on the board first, set up when Jacksonville suffered a high punt snap.

McNeal tied the game 7-7 on a 1-yard touchdown run after Kelvin Hughley’s 30-yard run got Jacksonville in position.

Jacksonville got the ball first in overtime, and McNeal scored on fourth down and two. His clinching interception game on fourth down and eight.

“I’m proud of our kids,” Sullivan said. “They just played their tails off, and Ramsay is a good football team. They’ve got some really good players.”

CENTRAL-CLAY 48, SIPSEY VALLEY 7: Daylon Houston rushed for 107 yards, and Taylor Boyd rushed for 94 as the Vols advanced to the second round.

Central-Clay will play host to Andalusia on Nov. 14.

Jer’darius Hall completed three of five passes for 70 yards and a touchdown, and Hudson Foster completed five of six for 44 yards and a touchdown.

Kaiden Glenn caught two touchdown passes, and Zion Newell caught one.

WESTBROOK CHRISTIAN 49, VINEMONT 0: Brody Blevins passed for a touchdown and ran for one, and the Warriors (10-1) will go to Geraldine in the second round.

Blevins threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Bo Kilgo and ran for a 17-yard score.

Easton Skaggs found the end zone twice for Westbrook Christian, scoring on a 1-yard run and a 22-yard interception return.

Read Barber returned a fumble 40 yards for a touchdown and hit seven extra points, and Sam Legg had a 26-yard touchdown run.
