PELL CITY — Jay’lin Taylor accounted for three touchdowns on returns, and Oxford beat Pell City 36-31 in a key Class 6A, Region 6 game Friday.
Oxford (4-3) upped to 3-1 in region play and stands alone in second place, behind Clay-Chalkville (3-0 region). The Yellow Jackets have beaten Pell City (2-2) and Pinson Valley 2-1).
Mountain Brook (1-2) beat Oxford, which closes out region play at Clay-Chalkville on Oct. 17 and against Huffman at home on Oct. 24.
Taylor returns kickoffs 92 and 60 yards for touchdowns. He also returned a punt 64 yards for a touchdown.
Maddox Mims completed 13 of 16 passes for 115 yards and rushed for 46 yards. Taylor had 82 receiving yards.
Oxford’s Kamari English and Marcus Lawler each had an interception, and Keenan Britt recorded a team-high 11 tackles.
ALEXANDRIA 39, HOKES BLUFF 21: Cole Wheeler completed 16 of 20 passes for 330 yards and three touchdowns, and Alexandria picked up a key victory in Class 4A, Region 6 play.
The Valley Cubs (5-1) improved to 3-1 in region play and control their destiny for the chance to host a first-round playoff game. The finish region play at Ashville, at home against Cherokee County and at Etowah.
The top two finishers in region play host first-round games.
Evan White caught eight passes for 122 yards and a touchdown against Hokes Bluff, and M.J. Morris seven passes for 87 yards and a touchdown, and T.J. Crook caught two passes for 63 yards and a touchdown.
J.J. Beason rushed for 54 yards and a touchdown, and Ryan Brown rushed for 49 yards and a touchdown.
Hokes Bluff’s Bryce Whitaker rushed fro 122 yards and a touchdown and five of eight passes for 44 yards. Brenton Hale rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns.
PIEDMONT 49, LOCUST FORK 9: Nick Mixson rushed seven times for 128 yards and a touchdown, and second-ranked Piedmont (6-0) improved to 4-0 in Class 3A, Region 6.
Jaxon Howard rushed six times for 52 yards and a touchdown, and Rollie Pinto had two carries for 47 yards and a touchdown.
The Bulldogs rushed for 271 yards.
Quarterback Cole Austin completed six of 10 passes for 69 yards. Including an 11-yard touchdown pass to Taylor Swain and a 21-yard touchdown pass to Mason Morrow.
Pinto had a 45 yard touchdown run, a 59-yard punt return for a touchdown and an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
WESTBROOK CHRISTIAN 48, OHATCHEE 0: Brody Blevins hit on 13 of 19 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns, and Westbrook Christian (5-1) upped to 4-1 in Class 3A, Region 6.
Ohatchee fell to 2-5, 1-4.
Blevins added 58 yards rushing and a touchdown, and Brodey Wood rushed for 90 yards and two touchdowns. Brodie Johnson caught three passes for 55 yards.
Gavin Michael returned the second-half kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown, and kicker Read Barber kicked all eight kickoffs for touchbacks.
Westbrook Christian gained 340 total yards, including 191 rushing. The Warriors held Ohatchee to 40 total yards … minus-13 yards in five first-half possessions while building a 34-0 halftime lead.
GLENCOE 56, WEAVER 19: Jaymen Mintz completed 12 of 13 passes for 109 yards and three touchdowns, and the Yellow Jackets (4-2) upped to 3-1 in Class 3A, Region 6 play.
Weaver, playing its first game since former Bearcats head coach Ken Cofer resigned Tuesday, fell to (1-5, 1-3). They played their third game under Michael Spurling, who took over as interim head coach when Cofer began administrative leave.
Isaiah Young caught three passes for 41 yards and two touchdowns, and Aiden Johnson caught a touchdown pass.
Alex Hudson led 10 Glencoe ball carriers with 699 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. Bronner McMurry added 37 yards and a touchdown, and Glencoe got a rushing touchdown apiece from Johnson and Josiah Bethel.
Weaver’s Taylor Green rushed 14 times for 69 yards and a touchdown, and Junior Allen completed eight of 16 passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns. Connor Richey caught all eight of Green’s completions.
PLEASANT VALLEY 34, CEDAR BLUFF 6: Braxton Salster completed eight of 14 passes for 91 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 40 yards and two touchdowns as the Raiders (6-1) improved to 2-1 in Class 2A, Region 7.
Salster’s touchdown runs covered 10 and 11 yards, and he threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Nic Acker, who caught three passes for 39 yards.
Salster also added seven tackles, with two for loss. He had one pass breakup and one forced fumble.
Cooper Dougal caught three passes for 38 yards and returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown.
Kayden Vick rushed 17 times for 123 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown run.
Izayah Nevens had a team-high 10 tackles, one for loss, and Brayden Pappa’s nine tackles included two for loss and a sack. Walker Roper added eight tackles, one for loss.
JACKSONVILLE 49, SPRINGVILLE 32: Jaden Jones rushed 20 times for 259 yards and a touchdown, and Jacksonville (4-3) improved to 3-1 in Class 5A, Region 6.
The Golden Eagles stand alone in second place with region games against Lincoln and St. Clair County remaining.
Springville is 1-5, 1-2.
Qua McNeal rushed for 130 yards and five touchdowns. Kamouri Harmon hit on 10 of 12 passes for 154 yards and a touchdown.
Jacksonville gained 565 total yards, 411 on the ground.
CENTRAL-CLAY 21, ELMORE COUNTY 14: Taylor Boyd rushed for 188 yards and a touchdown, and the Vols (6-1) upped to 4-0 in Class 5A, Region 4.
Elmore County dropped to 4-2, 2-1.
J.T. Wilkerson completed 10 of 18 passes for 93 yards and a 35-yard touchdown pass to Boyd with nine seconds left for the winning touchdown. Zion Newell added a touchdown run.
ASHVILLE 38, WHITE PLAINS 22: Crew Martin hit on 10 of 24 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns as the Wildcats (2-4) fell to 0-4 in Class 4A, Region 6.
Ashville (5-1) improved to 3-1 in region play under first-year head coach Mark Sanders, who served as head coach at Victory Christian and Donoho before working two years as Westbrook Christian’s offensive coordinator.
White Plains’ Bryson Cheatwood caught six passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns … covering four and 28 yards.
RANBURNE 47, HORSESHOE BEND 10: Aiden Whitman carried 10 times for 124 yards and two touchdowns, and Ranburne (3-4) upped to 2-2 in Class 2A, Region 4.
Cason Jones completed 12 of 14 passes for 228 yards and two touchdowns and caught Whitman’s touchdown pass.
Asher Brown had four catches for 84 yards and two touchdowns. Creed Young added a touchdown run, and Sawyer Freed returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown.
MUNFORD 21, TALLADEGA 12: Javier Curry rushed for 209 yards and a touchdown, and Munford (1-5) ended a seven-game losing streak dating back to last season. The Lions are 1-3 in Class 4A, Region 3.
Talladega fell to 1-5, 0-4.
Curry’s night included a 17-yard touchdown run.
Braydon Nichols rushed 13 times for 103 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown run. He also threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Kalvin Castleberry with 2:20 to go to put Munford up 21-6.
TALLASSEE 23, CLEBURNE COUNTY 16: Jaylon Baker hit on 13 of 19 passes for 171 yards as Cleburne County (2-4) fell to 1-3 in Class 4A, Region 3.
Tallassee is 3-3, 2-2.
Cade Shubert had five catches for 51 yards, and Carter Hughes rushed 16 times for 82 yards. Erick Escandan-Parades hit field goals of 41, 39 and 31 yards.
