WELLBORN — Coaches voted defending champion Alexandria as the top seed in the Calhoun County volleyball tournament Wednesday.
Coaches met at Wellborn High School and voted all seeds for the tournament, which starts Oct. 4 at Wellborn. The championship match is Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
Alexandria claimed its fifth county title under now-eighth-year head coach Whitney Welch and second in three years in 2024. The Valley Cubs are 30-5 after replacing key performers on the front line, including 2024 East Alabama Sports Today Class 4A-6A player of the year Eryn Spradley.
Spradley, Cassidy Hartsfield, Kaden Pritchett and McKinley Cooper signed to play in college.
“This year has been one of growth from day one, but I am so proud of this team’s progress over the first half of the season,” Alexandria coach Whitney Welch said. “They are a joy to coach, hard workers that want to get better and are playing the game the right way so far.
“I am proud of our three seniors. They are good kids who lead well and want what’s best for the team. This is giving the underclassmen a good culture to grow in. and. so far. they have wanted to fight for each other and make sure they compete at their best.”
Oxford, the 2024 runner up, is the No. 2 seed. The Yellow Jackets have reached the finals the past two years.
Oxford is 18-7 after replacing three college signees, Mileah Prince, Jazlyn Montgomery and Daelyn Bozeman. They helped the Yellow Jackets win a school record 45 matches in 2024.
Oxford lost to Alexandria in a five-set thriller on Sept. 15.
“Second seed is what I expected, since we lost to Alexandria,” Oxford coach Wendy McKibbin said. “I am very happy with my growth my team has made this season. We have had a really good week of volleyball matches.”
