“We were a little slow, sluggish, but in the second inning, we started hitting the ball,” Oxford coach Wendy McKibbin said. “I liked how we finished.”

ALEXANDRIA 14, PIEDMONT 1: Baylee Elston and Ryan Lumpkin homered, and No. 2 Alexandria (20-8) will play No. White Plains in Tuesday’s winners bracket action.

Piedmont will play Saks in the elimination bracket.

Alexandria is coming off of a 4-1 finish in a tournament at Albertville, falling 16-1 to Central-Phoenix City in the final.

“After the way we finished last weekend’s tournament, I was hoping we wouldn’t have a lull,” Alexandria coach Brian Hess said. “I put Khloe back on the mound to see if she had a little bit of bounce back.

“We were nervous early just because of the cheering section. We’re not used to having the guys here. Everyone was kind of tight, but as the game went on, they loosened up. I was proud of the way we played.”

“They had a mentality that no job was too little,” Burgess said. “I’m proud of the dugout. I gave Ella Ponder the job of, ‘You bring energy, and I need runs.’

“She’s out. She’s had surgery on her ACL, but man, just her energy and just all of them doing their job, no matter what the job is. No matter how big or how small it may seem, they just did it.”
