WELLBORN — A night of surprises, tributes and jamboree football left Jeff Smith remembering wise words from late Wellborn long-time assistant coach Lamar “Frog” Wade on Thursday.

“I’m going to quote old Coach Wade,” said Smith, Wellborn’s 17th year and winningest head football coach. “Coach Wade used to say, ‘None of us was born with a silver spoon in our months. When one of us does something good, we all do something good.’”

Smith got the surprise news that the Calhoun County Board of Education had voted to name Wellborn’s football field after Smith. He got the news from board member Mike Webb during a surprise announcement at halftime of Wellborn’s jamboree with Munford on Thursday.

A formal dedication is expected later this season.

As for the jamboree game, Wellborn won the varsity half 24-19. Munford’s B team won the third quarter 14-0, and the two junior high teams played to a 6-6 tie in the final quarter.
