Ohatchee has hired its third boys’ basketball coach in three years, and Weaver has its new softball coach.
The Calhoun County Board of Education on Thursday approved David Beegle as Ohatchee’s boys’ basketball coach, and Becca Feazell will take over the Weaver softball program.
Beegle becomes the latest in several hires for Ohatchee, including Blake Jennings (football), Jake Welch (baseball) and Dustin Screws (wrestling).
Beegle is Ohatchee’s third head boys’ basketball coach on three years. Bryant Ginn, an Alexandria grad, went back to his alma mater two years ago, and Quintarius Hutchison left after one year for Gadsden City.
Beegle, a 2004 Weaver grad, coached at Ohatchee previously. He was head baseball coach for one year and coached on Scott Martin’s football staff before leaving to become principal at Steele Elementary.
He also coached under Daryl Hamby at Weaver and at Ashville.
Beegle will serve on the football and baseball staffs, as well, at Ohatchee.
Feazell comes to Weaver after three years of teaching and coaching at Cleburne County. She was middle school head softball coach at Cleburne County and served as an assistant in softball and volleyball at Cleburne County and Lincoln.
The Southside graduate played softball for Wallace State Community College and graduated from Jacksonville State University.
Feazell takes over for Andy Fulmer, who left Weaver to become an assistant coach in three sports at Cleburne County. Her hiring also closes the loop on openings caused by Fulmer’s departure. Girls; wrestling coach Justin Brown took over the boys’ program, and Wynn Knight was hired to coach the girls.
For Beegle, giving up administration to return to coaching brought his workplace much closer to home. He lives 40 miles from Steele Elementary, in St. Clair County, and eight miles from Ohatchee’s campus.
Son Sawyer, a rising eighth-grader, is an up-and-coming athlete in football, basketball and baseball. Daughter Sayde, a seventh-grader, plays basketball and volleyball and cheers.
“My kids are to the point where they’re playing high school sports, and I want to be involved,” Beegle said. “It’ll give us a chance to go to school together. That’s never really been an opportunity, but as a father and a coach, an administration, an educator in general, I love kids, and I love mine. I want to be around them.”
He also looks forward to reuniting with Ohatchee staff. He coached on the Indians’ football staff when Jennings served as defensive coordinator.
“I think about the coaching staff at Ohatchee and the coaching staff that I worked with at Weaver, and the fun that we had with those guys and the comaraderie, and I can just see it with those guys at Ohatchee now,” he said,.
Feazell will get her varsity head-coaching start.
“Really and truly, I’ve always wanted to be a head coach and influence the girls,” she said. “This is my third year in teaching, and I really thought it would be a good time for me to start learning to be a head coach.”
Weaver made East Regional appearances both years under Fulmer and under previous head coach, Gary Atchley.
“I’m super excited,” Feazell said. “I think I’m walking into a really good situation, especially with them being so young and having a berth at regional. If they buy in, they’ll be pretty good.”
