ALBERTVILLE — Adajiah Wilson’s sacrifice bunt scored Madison Murphy in the bottom of the eighth inning, and Oxford beat area rival Pell City 9-8 to clinch the East Regional’s top state qualifying spot for Class 6A on Tuesday.

Tymeria Smith-Lindsey scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game 8-8.

“So very proud of this team,” Oxford coach Wendy McKibbin said.

Oxford (23-18) earned the top area seed and right to host the 6A, Area 12 tournament, but Pell City won the area tourney in Oxford. The Yellow Jackets avenged themselves at Albertville’s Sand Mountain Park.

Kaelyn Crossly hit her second home run at regional while going 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs. Ashlyn Burns had a double and RBI, and Oxford got a single and RBI apiece from Murphy and Emma Tims-Becerra.

Berkley Mooney got the win, allowing 10 hits and four earned runs but striking out 12 batters over 6 1/3 innings.

Class 4A

CHEROKEE COUNTY PREVAILS: Raechel Russell’s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh provided the answer after White Plains tied the game in the top of the inning, and the Warriors (35-9) won 2-1 to take the region’s top state qualifying spot for Class 4A.

White Plains (28-16), which lost leadoff hitter Callie Richardson to a knee injury in the Wildcats’ regional opener against North Jackson, fell to the elimination-bracket final and lost to Madison County, 18-3.

White Plains tied the game against Cherokee County 1-1 in the top of the seventh on Cassidy Arnold’s RBI double.

Lanie Williams took a 1-0 lead on Lanie Williams’ home run in the fourth inning.

Emma Hill got the win, striking out 15 batters and spreading out seven hits in seven innings. White Plains’ Leighton Arnold allowed eight hits and struck out four batters in 6 1/3 innings.

Class 5A

ALEXANDRIA: The Valley Cubs opened the day with a 17-2 rout of Guntersville but fell to Moody 12-5 in the winners’ bracket.

Alexandria (30-13-1) will play St. Clair County. The Valley Cubs must win three games Wednesday to advance to the state tournament.

Moody and Southside will play the winners’ bracket final, with the winner taking the East Regional’s top state qualifying spot for Class 5A. The loser will battle the elimination-bracket survivor for the other state berth.

Charlee Parris hit a grand slam and tripled twice and drove in seven runs against Guntersville. Jill Cockrell tripled and drove in three runs, and Brenlee Sparks had a single and two RBIs.

Reece Carr got the win, allowing four hits and striking out four batters in three innings.

Allyssa Hunt homers and doubled with three RBIs against Moody.

Class 1A

SPRING GARDEN: The Panthers (26-10) opened with a 17-1 rout of Coosa Christian then fell to Skyline, 8-1.

Spring Garden will play Cedar Bluff in the elimination bracket and must win three games Wednesday to earn a berth to the state tournament.

Against Coosa Christian, Avery Steward homered, double and drove in two runs while going 3-for-3. Maggie Jarrett went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs, and Addie Word went 3-for-3 with a triple, two runs and three RBIs.

Lillian McCain allowed three hits with one strikeout in three innings while getting the win.
