Lions at the gate

Baseball players from Calhoun, Etowah County area high schools will play in Lions Club East-West All-Star Series Tuesday in Gadsden

By East Alabama Sports Today

A team of 30 players representing 13 schools from the immediate four-county area will take on a similar team from the Gadsden area Tuesday night at the Gadsden Sports Complex as part of the 89th annual Lions Club East-West High School All-Star Series.

The teams will play two nine-inning games starting at 4:30 p.m. They are expected to play another doubleheader Thursday. Former Faith Christian coach Jason Pahman will coach the Calhoun County-area East squad and Gadsden City’s Scott Brackett will coach the West.

After this series, the teams will be condensed to another 30-man roster with hopes of playing similar all-star teams   at the Gadsden Sports Complex.

The hitters on the East squad have combined for 133 doubles, 19 homers and 344 RBIs. The pitchers have combined for 37 wins and 395 strikeouts.

“The juniors and seniors from these counties and these schools are some of the best that you’ll get in these counties,” Pahman said. “This gives those seniors another chance to put those uniforms on and represent their schools and get to play in front of their parents one more time and give them a chance to play in front of (talent evaluators and college coaches) and show what they can do.”

Admission will be taken at the gate.
