Alexandria and Pleasant Valley get underway in the Gulf Coast Classic II

GULF SHORES — Alexandria went 3-0 and Pleasant Valley went 1-2 in their respective pools on the opening day of the Gulf Coast Classic II tournament Monday.

Alexandria beat teams from three different states in taking down Marshall County (Tenn.) 19-4, Houston Academy 1-0 and Buffalo Springs (Ark.) 8-2. 

Pleasant Valley beat Southeastern 6-3 and lost to Wetumpka 5-0 and Yorkville (Ill.) 5-1.

Ashley Phillips had a big day for the Lady Cubs. She went 6-for-8 with nine RBIs in the three games. She was 4-for-4 with seven RBIs against Marshall County. She broke a 4-4 tie with an RBI double in the second inning and hit a grand slam in the third.

Jill Cockrell went 4-for-4 in the game. Pressley Slaton went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and Rylee Gattis had three RBIs. Slaton was 5-for-6 with eight RBIs in two games.

Slaton and Addie Jennings both homered in the Buffalo Springs game. Slaton had four RBIs and was the winning pitcher.

The Houston Academy game belonged to pitcher Gattis. She threw a five-inning two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts. She also drove in the only run of the game in the fourth inning. 

Lily Henry went 3-for-3, Haylie Lee drove in three runs and gave up one hit and an unearned run from the circle in Pleasant Valley’s win over Southeastern. Lee came in after Henry walked the bases loaded and after getting her bearings retired the final 13 batters she faced.

The Lady Raiders were two-hit by Wetumpka. Gracee Ward’s RBI double in the second gave PV a 1-0 lead against Yorkville, but the Illinois team scored three in the bottom of the inning.
