OHATCHEE — One county’s best developing rivalries served up another thrilling chapter Friday.
Mareese Traylor’s 90-yard kickoff return with two minutes remaining broke a tie game for good, and No. 8 Wellborn survived 52-44 in a classic, Class 2A, Region 6 showdown on the Creekbank.
Wellborn (7-0) upped 4-0 in region play and remains tied with No. 5 Piedmont atop the region standings. Ohatchee (4-3) is 2-2 and tied with No. 10 Pleasant Valley and Gaston for third in the region headed into next week’s game at Pleasant Valley.
Wellborn took a 16-6-1 edge in the all-time series against Ohatchee, but Ohatchee has a 5-4 edge in the past nine meetings dating back to 2016. They’ve played the past seven years, with Wellborn winning four of those games.
Three of those were one-score games, including an overtime game, which Wellborn won 20-14 in 2020.
Friday’s game was tied 28-28 with 3:15 to play.
The final twists and turns included Sawyer Beegle’s 40-yard touchdown pass to Phoenix Tuiolosega plus a two-point conversion to tie the game 44-44.
Traylor answered with his game-winning kickoff return, though Ohatchee had one last shot. Beegle’s pass to the end zone on the game’s final play fell incomplete.
Traylor finished with 207 rushing yards on 17 carries and four total touchdowns, including his kickoff return.
Quarterback Braden Horton accounted for 82 yards in total offense, including two rushing touchdowns. Kaden Horton rushed for 43 Yards and a touchdown.
Wellborn amassed 402 total yards, including 361 on the ground, and surpassed 50 points for the fifth time this season. The Panthers have scored 44 or more points in all seven games.
Beagle completed 12 of 18 passes for 264 yards and three touchdowns. Tuiolosega had three catches for 187 yards and a touchdown, and Gus Hunter caught thee passes for 69 yards and two touchdowns.
Jayden Siegler led Ohatchee rushers with 100 yards and two touchdowns, and Tuiolosega had a rushing touchdown.
ALEXANDRIA 32, CENTRAL-CLAY 14: J.J. Beason rushed for 178 yards and four touchdowns, and Class 4A No. 2 Alexandria prevailed in a battle of Class 4A, Region 6 blue bloods.
The Valley Cubs (6-0) upped to 4-0 in region play, and Central-Clay (2-4) is 1-2.
The game also marked retiring Central-Clay coach Danny Horn’s final scheduled coaching appearance in Calhoun County. The state’s all-time winningest coach stands at 376-104 in 38 years with eight state championships, six at the late Clay County High School and two at Central-Clay.
Beason’s touchdown runs covered 40, 11, seven and 33 yards.
Cole Wheeler completed seven of 14 passes for 77 yards. He also kicked a 34-yard field goal, kicked three extra points and ran for a two-point conversion.
Jonathan Santos added 72 yards rushing.
Central-Clay’s No. 2 rushed for 72 yards, including a 46-yard touchdown run, and No. 6 had a 13-yard touchdown run.
WHITE PLAINS 42, WEAVER 8: Antonio Woods led a balanced rushing output with 85 yards and a touchdown, and White Plains (3-3) upped to 2-2 in Class 3A, Region 4 play.
The WIldcats are enjoying their first three-game winning streak since finishing the 2011 season with three victories under then-head coach Heath Harmon.
Crew Martin added 81 yards on 11 carries with a touchdown, and Bryson Cheatwood got all 80 of his rushing yards on a touchdown run.
Quarterback Walker Edwards hit on six of eight passes for 56 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown pass to Cheatwood.
CLEBURNE COUNTY 50, CHILDERSBURG 6: Jaylon Baker completed 10 of 15 passes for 250 yards and three touchdowns, and Class 3A No. 8 Cleburne County is 6-0 for the first time since starting 8-0 in 2007.
The Tigers are also 4-0 in Class 3A, Region 4.
Cade Shubert had four catches for 145 yards and two touchdowns and returned a kickoff 55 yards for a touchdown.
Lyric Ware caught six passes for 107 yards and a touchdown.
Elijah Ware rushed six times for 100 yards and a touchdown, and Randall Brown added two carries for 50 yards and a touchdown. Silas Hunt had a 3-yard touchdown run.
Cleburne County had 277 yards passing and 194 rushing.
HOKES BLUFF 37, HOLLY POND 12: Dean Morgan accounted for 195 yards in total offense and three touchdowns, and Hokes Bluff (2-4) reached 2-2 in Class 3A, Region 6.
Morgan completed seven of 10 passes for 129 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown pass to Javin Norman. Morgan also rushed for 66 yards, with touchdown runs of two, 21 and 20 yards.
Brenton Hale had a 3-yard touchdown run on the way to 71 yards rushing, and Jace Hanks ran for a team-best 93 yards.
Alln Cox hit a 22-yard field goal and four extra points.
