Boys roundup: Faith Christian’s Hughes gets first win as a varsity head coach; Oxford, PV, Talladega get victories

By East Alabama Sports Today

GLENCOE –
It may not have happened as soon as he would have liked, but Cory Hughes picked up his first victory as a varsity head basketball coach Monday night when his Faith Christian Lions defeated Glencoe 83-65 in the Glencoe Thanksgiving Classic.

HUGHES

“It’s fantastic,” the former basketball official turned coach said. “Our guys are super excited.

“We came out tonight and we just executed. We write on the board before every game ‘Do your job.’ Tonight, they all came out and did their job. I’m super proud. When they do their job, good things happen.

“You know, I haven’t gotten nervous for a game until tonight. You don’t want to be 0-3 and you definitely don’t want to be 0-4. Today was a great day because everything finally came together for us.”

The Lions (1-3) put five scorers in double figures, led by Thomas Curlee’s 29. Curlee, who is just about all the way back from a high ankle sprain he suffered in a preseason scrimmage, was 12-of-23 from the floor.

“Thomas had a huge game for us in a lot of ways; probably the biggest one was he was an igniter on defense,” Hughes said. “He had steal after steal. He had a hand in the passing lane, which is what we teach, and he’s just picking them off.”

Faith’s other double-figure scorers were Ethan Richarzhagen (14), Jacques Prater (12), Yoshua Arevalo (10) and Colton Pahman (10).

Andrew Greene led Glencoe with 19 points. Braylen Smith had 15 and Aiden Cornutt 13.

Hughes, who succeeded Schuessler Ware at the Class 1A school, noted that he and new Glencoe coach Ryan Chambless are products of the same system at Alexandria. When he looked out on the floor during pre-game, the Yellow Jackets were doing the same warmups as his Lions.

Heritage Classic

FAIRFIELD – Rylan Houck hit 11 of 12 free throws and finished with 29 points to lead Oxford over Jackson-Olin 52-38 in the Heritage Classic at Fairfield. He scored 21 in the second half, hitting his last seven free throws in a row, while the Jackets held the Mustangs to 15 points.

It was a costly victory for the Yellow Jackets. They likely have lost Zurrell Garrett for the next six weeks with a possible broken collarbone. They already were without Kyler Wright, who they’re hoping can return for Tuesday’s winners bracket game with Pinson Valley.

(UPDATE: Further tests revealed a shoulder sprain. It is hoped Garrett will return for the Huntsville City Classic.)

Jayden Lewis is expected to step into Garrett’s role for the time being. Lewis stepped up against the Mustangs, creating a presence in the paint and scoring nine points in the game.

Although they did not score, Gibson Reaves and Aaron McFarland also gave the Jackets what coach Joel VanMeter called “tremendous minutes” in supporting roles.
