OXFORD –
Nobody could blame the Oxford girls basketball team for feeling a little run down. They were coming to the end of a busy week not even NBA teams have to endure.

Kaleah Taylor helped Oxford get off to a fast start and led the Lady Jackets with 15 points. (Photos by B.J. Franklin)

But the Lady Jackets dug deep and ran through Talladega 66-30 at the Oxford Sports Arena.

Oxford (19-6) was playing its third game in four days and fifth in six, but jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead and rode it to a 17-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. Kaleah Taylor had six points as five Lady Jackets scored. Taylor led Oxford with 15 points.

The second quarter was all Oxford as six Lady Jackets scored 12 straight points and their defense held Talladega to just four points on the way to a 36-13 halftime lead.

“We got an early lead, so we were able to sub more,” Lady Jackets coach Melissa Bennett said. “Not having a long bus ride helps, too. Monday we went to Springville; we were just zapped.”

Bennett called off the full court press in the third quarter and Talladega chopped the lead to 18 points at one point. However, the half-court trap the Lady Jackets were using was very effective and they went on a 12-point run to blow the game open.

There is no rest for the weary. The Lady Jackets return to the court Thursday at Sylacauga. – Brant Locklier

Jorda Crook scored 19 points, Rachel Dunaway had 12 and the Lady Indians erupted for 31 points in the third quarter to put away the game away. Crook had 10, Tori Vice eight and Gracie George six in the Lady Indians’ big quarter.

“I took the first five out after the first minute and a half of very uninspiring basketball and didn’t let them play until the last two minutes of the half,” he said. “I let them play the first five minutes of the second half and we came out with way more energy.”

Dunaway is a junior getting back into the swing of basketball after not playing last year. She was one of the non-starters who replaced the first group and scored six points in the first half with a 3-pointer on her first shot of the game.
