LINCOLN – Basketball teams play all year for the right to host their area tournaments with an eye towards making their road to the postseason smoother.

Alexandria checked that box on its to-do Tuesday when it went on the road a day after winning an intense rivalry game at the buzzer and beat Lincoln 81-65 to secure the top spot in Class 5A Area 11.

The Valley Cubs have one more area game left, later this week against St. Clair County, but even if they lose and fall into a tie for first, they own the tiebreaker over Lincoln by virtue of their season sweep of Moody.

“You always want to host,” Alexandria coach Jason Johnson said. “It just takes a little pressure off you. You’ve got your home gym and you like your goals. We’re excited. We’ll try to finish up this week and next with some good play.”

The Cubs played well Tuesday, especially coming off a down-to-the-wire win over Jacksonville the night before. Five players scored in double figures, led by D’Anthony Walton (19) and Julian Wright (18). Landan Williams had 16 and Javais McGhee and Collin Taylor had 13 apiece. McGhee was 9-of-12 from the free throw line – all in the fourth quarter.

“We got quality production out of more than one or two people; it was like three or four,” Johnson said. “That’s what we’ve been trying to preach to them – be a little more consistent, don’t get 15 one night and three or four the next.

Defensively, they gave up only two offensive rebounds all game and although Brian Garrett scored a game-high 26 points with four 3-pointers Johnson thought they covered him “pretty good.”

“To play two quality games back-to-back, high energy games, with our limited number of players, that was going to be key – if we were going to be able to handle the basketball.”

PIEDMONT 57, JACKSONVILLE 54: Round 2 goes to the Bulldogs.

Last Wednesday, Jacksonville beat Piedmont by nine in the Calhoun County Tournament. The Bulldogs got some payback Tuesday by handing Jacksonville its second loss in as many days with overtime riding on the last shot.

The one constant in the two games has been Alex Odam. The Bulldogs’ red-headed rocket launcher scored 36 points in the loss, the best output of the 2021 tournament at the time; he went for 35 with a better shooting eye Tuesday. He was 14-of-29 from the floor in the first game in Pete Mathews Coliseum, but 12-of-17 in the friendly confines of the Piedmont gym.

“It helped playing them last week,” Piedmont coach JoJo Odam said. “We had a better feel for them anad knew more about them. We played better defense tonight than we did that game, too.”

Jack Hayes scored all nine of his points on three 3-pointers in the first quarter and Odam had eight as the Bulldogs opened a 19-10 lead. The Golden Eagles spread it around in the second quarter and made it a two-point game at halftime.

The Bulldogs were leading by two in the closing seconds when Odam was fouled. He made the first free throw, but missed the second. Jacksonville brought it down and Caden Johnson’s potential game-tying 3-pointer missed the mark.

The Golden Eagles lost Monday when Alexandria’s Collin Taylor hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer of a tie game. They are 1-5 in games decided by five points or fewer this season and have lost four by three or less.

With the 35 points Odam went over 1,600 for his career and moved to within 73 points of becoming the Bulldogs’ all-time leading scorer.

Quin Long led Jacksonville with 20 points.

OXFORD 75, TALLADEGA 45: When Oxford and Talladega get together on the basketball floor it’s usually a war of flying bodies and fast breaks and this one was no exception.

The Tigers (14-2) came out trying to match Oxford’s full court press and that played right into the hands of the Yellow Jackets (22-2).

Roc Taylor poured in 22 points and hauled down seven rebounds as the Jackets won their 18th in a row. The high-flying Jackets were all over the floor with five dunks and six 3-pointers in the first three quarters, bolting to a 60-35 lead. Justin Moore had three of the dunks and Rylan Houck had two.
