Alexandria had a little hangover from winning the county championship the night before and Oxford had one of its best nights of the season in winning two matches Tuesday night.

The Lady Jackets avenged a loss in the county tournament semifinals with a 2-1 victory over county champion Alexandria (25-20, 11-25, 15-7) and a 2-0 sweep over Etowah (25-8, 25-14).

It was Alexandria’s first loss to an in-county opponent this season.

Lakijah Brown and Aumaria Lindsey both had 10 kills for Oxford (22-16). Cadie Burn had 34 assists.

“I think they were just glad to finish two matches in a row with wins,” Oxford assistant coach Rachel Poe said. “We are working on maintaining energy, giving max effort and being consistent … things that have nothing to do with volleyball skills. I think they were excited to see some progress in those areas and it pay off.”

Alexandria (39-7) swept area foe Etowah in the night’s other match, 3-0.

OHATCHEE –
The Lady Indians moved a step closer to clinching an area regular-season title and automatic bid to the regionals that got away from them last year with a dominant performance. They held to Gaston to one point in the first set and three in the second.

If the Lady Indians (26-6) can beat Westbrook Christian at home Thursday night they will complete an undefeated area season, clinch the No. 1 seed and host the Class 2A Area 11 tournament. Being in a three-team area, they’d automatically qualify for the regionals in Huntsville.

“We’re excited,” second-year Ohatchee head coach Rebecca Hughes said. “I know we were pretty close last year and came up short when we went to their place for the second time. Any time we play Westbrook it’s pretty much a head-to-head match. The last time we went there we went four games and it was a fight for every game.”

Their serves regularly found open spaces Tuesday night. Abby Hester had 10 aces and Gracee Haynes had eight. Jorda Crook recorded 12 kills and Bailey Carden had eight.
