Antonio Kite may have been the most valuable player of the tournament, but Kwame Milton certainly was the MVP of the game.

Milton hit a 3-pointer from the left side with 21 seconds to play and Anniston held its breath as the clock wound down to beat Talladega 41-40 Thursday for the Class 4A Area 9 boys championship.

The Bulldogs worked the ball along the arc to set up their game-winner. Tournament MVP Antonio Kite got it over to William Fairley, who then found Milton alone in the left corner. Talladega’s J.Q. Wilson came flying across to contest the shot, but Milton found nothing but net.

The 3-pointer capped a big second half for the junior, who had all but two of the Bulldogs’ points in the final two quarters. Those other two were a pair of free throws by Theron Montgomery to tie the game at 38 with 2:16 to play.

Milton scored 23 in the game with six 3-pointers. Kite had seven points and Montgomery eight.

After gaining a 35-33 lead at the end of the third quarter behind 10 of D’Corian Wilson’s 18 points, the Tigers went cold and were 0-for-9 from the field in the fourth quarter.

Anniston opened an 11-point lead in the second quarter, but the Tigers put together an 8-0 run and cut the deficit to three by halftime.

The Bulldogs (22-7) await the loser of Saturday’s Cherokee County-Jacksonville game for its subregion matchup Tuesday. The winner of that game will host Talladega (21-8).
