Lots on the line

This weekend’s Calhoun County Championship will decide County Tour Player of the Year, 16 slots in County Match Play Championship

By East Alabama Sports Today

Only two players have a chance to become this year’s Calhoun County Player of the Year, but there will be plenty to play for deeper in the standings as players try to secure the final places in the County Match Play Championship during this weekend’s 82nd Calhoun County Championship at the Anniston Municipal Golf Course.

By the end of the weekend current points leader Ty Cole or Gary Wigington will be Player of the Year, but with 13 of the current top 16 and all of the next five in the field there are plenty of spots in the Match Play up for grabs. Only 82.5 points separate 13th from 21st in the current standings.

Cole, a three-time winner on the Tour this season, holds a 112.5-point lead over his Sunny King Charity Classic partner. Cole would win Player of the Year – for the third time in four years – by finishing first or second, which he has done in five of six Tour events this season.

If Wigington wins the tournament it would be his seventh County title, making him the all-time winningest player in the event’s storied history, and could bring his fourth Player of the Year award.

Wigington and Cole could finish tied in the adjusted points standings – if Wigington wins and Cole finishes third – but Cole would get the nod by virtue of his three tour wins.

Jeremy McGatha is the defending champion.
