BIRMINGHAM – Ott Chandler thought it was pretty special when he and son Dalton won the Sunny King Charity Classic together in record-setting fashion back in 2015. He found something that topped it Monday.

The Chandlers won the Father-Son Division of the inaugural Alabama State Parent-Child Championship at Oxmoor Valley. They shot 4-under-par 68 in the modified alternate shot format on the Ridge Course, making birdie on each of the last two holes, and won by four shots. Their score also would have won the Open Division by three shots.

“I was telling Dalton I think this beat it,” Ott said. “I didn’t think I’d ever have that feeling of that again, but to win the whole state championship Father-Son, the first to ever win it, that’s pretty neat. This one-upped it.”

The Chandlers won the 2015 Sunny King with a then all-time record 42-under-par 172. They were the first father-son team to win it and the first winners to post all three rounds in the 50s

Their games fit Monday’s format perfectly: Dalton, 23, drives the ball long and Ott, 54, has a lethal short game. They made six birdies and played the back nine in 4-under.

“If daddy can play my tee ball he’s pretty good; he’s better than I am from my tee ball,” Dalton said. “You can say if the older Chandler could play from where his son’s tee ball was, he could beat Tiger Woods.”

Both Chandlers will be playing as individuals this weekend in the 82nd Calhoun County Championship at Anniston Municipal. Dalton will be looking for a big finish for a chance to qualify for the 16-man Calhoun County Match Play Championship.
