JACKSONVILLE — The Donoho boys made of clean sweep of the Class 1A-2A-3A, Section 4 tennis tournament Monday. As champions, the Falcons qualified for the State Tournament in Mobile next week.

Rain halted play in the girls competition, which will be completed Tuesday morning. However, Donoho and Faith Christian accumulated enough points to clinch berths in the State Tournament.

Donoho’s girls had a 43-37 edge in team points when the rain came. Although the Falcons are favored, having won twice over Faith Christian in the regular season, the Lions still have a mathematical chance to overtake Donoho for the sectional championship.

Regardless, this will be Faith Christian girls’ first trip to the State Tournament.

The real drama of the day came for second place in the boys tournament to determine who is the other qualifier for the State Tournament.

Victory Christian had slipped by Pleasant Valley during the regular season, 5-4, with several close matches.

Victory Christian had a 6-3 edge in points over Pleasant Valley after the completion of boys doubles. Pleasant Valley then pulled within one point of the Lions, winning three singles semifinals to two for Victory Christian.

The deciding match came down to the No. 2 Singles semifinals between the Raiders’ Dakota Herron and the Lions’ Ben Weir. Weir had won their previous regular season matchup.

After an hour and a half of back and forth competition, Herron got revenge, 11-9, and the Raiders earned their first trip to the State Tournament by one point ahead of Victory Christian.

The boys champions, Donoho, were led by Cooper Montgomery at No. 1 Singles. Montgomery defeated Pleasant Valley’s Caleb Kirk, 6-4, 6-4, in the finals. He then teamed up with David Hudson for the No. 1 Doubles title, defeating Kirk and Dakota Herron of Pleasant Valley, 6-0, 6-0.

Donoho’s Wittney Brown was able to claim the No. 1 Singles title before the rain came, defeating Abby Emerson of Faith Christian, 6-1, 6-1 in the finals.
