Donoho swimmers advance to state finals; Tallassee, Weaver, Alexandria are top three teams after first day of Gene Taylor Memorial wrestling

AUBURN — Donoho’s Pitts Angell advanced to the state finals in two individual events and helped the Falcons’ 400 freestyle relay qualify Friday at the State Swimming and Diving Championships.

Angell will be seeded fourth in the 1A-5A boys 100 butterfly and seeded eighth in the 1A-5A boys 100 freestyle in the finals at the Auburn University pool on Saturday. He swam personal best times in both preliminaries.

“Pitts swam well today,” Donoho coach Johnnie Pearson said. “He has an opportunity to really shine in the final tomorrow.”

Angell also swam the third leg of the relay, behind Camden Kitchen and Slade Haney and ahead of anchor Marshall Twigg.

“The boys relay continues to have good things happen to them; another three seconds faster than sectionals and grabbed a spot in the final,” Pearson said. “They have done a tremendous amount of work to get to this point and they have earned their spot.”

Other local swimmers who swam in the event and failed to make the finals were Weaver’s Lucia Balma, White Plains’ Jacob Heath, Faith Christian’s Sydney Parker and Oxford’s Cade Hilbun.
