All county swimmers still alive at sectional meet; PV girls basketball wins it from the foul line; White Plains, Anniston win big

BIRMINGHAM – All the swimmers from Calhoun County are still alive for a in the State Swimming Championships next month at Auburn.

The county group at the AHSAA Central Sectional at the Crossplex Pool is led by Donoho’s Pitts Angell and Weaver’s Lucia Balma, the two high-point scorers in the Calhoun County Championships. Both swimmings have made state cuts in their two events – Balma in the girls 1A-5A 2pp freestyle and 500 freestyle, and Angell is the boys 100 butterfly and the 100 freestyle.

Oxford’s Cade Hilbun has made his state cut in the boys 6A freestyle and is seeded seventh in the 100 backstroke.

The way to reach the state championship meet Dec. 9-10 at Auburn is either finishing in the top four of an event final or make the state qualifying standard at the sectional.

The other local swimmers are Weaver’s Emma Levesque and Dylan Smith, White Plains’ Elisabeth Martin and Jacob Heath, and Wellborn’s Lance leguerre. Donoho’s girls have three relays swimming and Donoho’s boys have two.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Pleasant Valley hit 35 or 47 free throws, 14 of 18 in the fourth quarter when it pulled away from a tied game – to beat Susan Moore 71-65.

Atleigh Brannon was 12 of 16 at the line and Mikala Simpson was 14 of 18 to lead the parade to the foul line. Simpson finished with 23 points. Brannon had 15 and Mac Parris had 18.

The Lady Raiders trailed by nine at the end of the first quarter, but rallied to take a one-point halftime lead.

White Plains 51, Faith Christian 16

Landry Bussey scored 10 of her 12 first in the first quarter to get the Lady Wildcats off to a fast start. Bussey and Hanna Barno (four 3s) had 12 points apiece. White Plains held the Lady Lions scoreless in the fourth quarter.

White Plains beat Faith Christian in the boys game 66-40 in a game that was tied at 28 with 5:44 left in the third quarter.

ANNISTON 57, BTW MONTGOMERY 26

Kendra Finley scored her first career double-double as the Lady Bulldogs (2-1) swamped their second straight opponent. Finley had 14 points, six rebounds and 10 steals. Miajah Bullock led the Lady Bulldogs with 23 points, five rebounds and four steals.
