Tuesday boys roundup

Oxford scores first 10 points against Pell City, holds on to win; Sacred Heart back to winning ways after County final

By East Alabama Sports Today

OXFORD – It wasn’t the type of game you’d find hanging on a wall, but it was an area victory and that’s all that mattered to Oxford coach Joel Van Meter.

The Yellow Jackets weren’t particularly sharp Tuesday night. They scored the first 10 points of the game and had plenty to take down area rival Pell City 55-44.

“We did exactly like I wanted them to do – drive to the basket,” Van Meter said. “We did it all night long and the easy shots just would not drop.

“That hurt our defense as we were not being rewarded for taking good shots and didn’t play as hard on defense. We just were not clicking tonight, but we still got an 11-point win.”

Braden Jones led the Jackets with 18 points and eight rebounds. He scored their first eight points of the second half – and 10 in the third quarter — then got in foul trouble.

Point guard Eugene Leonard added 13 points. He hit his first 11 free throws and had hit eight in a row in the fourth quarter before suffering his only miss.

Sacred Heart 87, Donoho 33: The Cardinals bounced back from their loss in the Calhoun County Tournament championship game to easily throttle Donoho and win their 20th game of the season (20-8).

Kevion Nolan led all scorers with 24 points, D.J. Heath added 21. Noland had 18 in the first half and Heath had 14. Murdock Simmons and Kavarri Ross had 15 and 12, respectively.
