PIEDMONT – It wasn’t pretty by any means, but the Piedmont Lady Bulldogs scratched their way to a 31-28 victory over visiting Cherokee County Tuesday.

Cherokee County (10-10) led at the end of the first quarter and built a 17-11 advantage at halftime. The Lady Warriors’ lead swelled to 22-11 on a basket by Kendal Perry with 5:34 left in the third quarter before Piedmont (10-14) went on an 11-0 run to tie the game at 22 heading into the fourth quarter.

“That’s one thing that we have as a strong point this year, having girls not let up and playing all the way to the end,” Piedmont coach Terrace Ridley said. “Our defense is what we strive on this year. We know we have to play solid defense to win ball games.”

Early in the fourth, Perry canned a trey to put the Lady Warriors back out in front 25-22. A pair of free throws by Jensen Alexander with 2:05 remaining gave Cherokee County at 28-24 advantage, but Piedmont closed out the game on a 7-0 run for the final.

Keshauna Jones drained a trey with just under a minute to go to make it 28-27. A basket by Lulu Jackson with 30 seconds left gave the Lady Bulldogs a 29-28 lead and Piedmont finished the game off on a layup by Jakieya Mitchell as time expired.

Ridley led the Lady Bulldogs with 13 points. Brooke Perry had six, while Mitchell and Jones both finished with four.

Alexandria 29, Ohatchee 22: The Lady Cubs won in a heated battle that was back and forth all night.

The lead flip-flopped each quarter. Alexandria led after the first and third quarters and carried the latter lead through to the rest of the game.

It was heavily defensive affair that was ultimately decided on who could get the shots to fall more.

Alexandria’s Connieya Bradford led all scorers with 18 points and seven rebounds. Destiny Heathcock hit a late 3-pointer at the end of the third to quarter to keep the pressure up.
