Wellborn wins, Alexandria’s Knop MVW in Lincoln tournament; Weaver goes 3-2 in Tallassee

By East Alabama Sports Today

LINCOLN – Three Wellborn wrestlers won weight-division titles and four others were runner-ups Saturday as the Panthers won Lincoln’s Golden Bear Classic.

Alexandria and Cleburne County finished second and third, respectively. Wellborn scored 235.5 points, Alexandria had 221.5 and Cleburne County had 190.

Alexandria freshman Christian Knop was named most valuable wrestler and Cubs senior Lane Trapp’s major decision over Gadsden City’s Samuel Jaggers in the 113 title bout was voted as the best match of the tournament.

Wellborn’s champions included Matthew Lindsey (132), Justin Conner (145) and Kane Pitts (182). In their title bouts, Lindsey pinned Ranburne’s Spencer Jordan (1:29), Conner pinned Cleburne County’s Hunter Beason (1:19), and Pitts pinned Cleburne County’s Sam Pate (5:53).

The Panthers’ runner-ups were Namath Pitts (106), Brady Rinehard (120), Clayton Connor (152) and Zachary Chandler (195).

Alexandria’s champions included Jimmy Wilson (106), Trapp (113), Fletcher Swindall (120), Matthew Schmaltz (126) and Knop (170).

In their title matches, Wilson pinned Wellborn’s Pitts (2:57), Trapp won 9-0 over Jaggers, Swindall won a 13-1 major decision over Wellborn’s Rinehard, Schmaltz won by forfeit and Knop won an 11-4 decision over Ranburne’s Dalton Wiggins.

Knop’s MVW award was based largely on his win over the highly regarded Wiggins. It was his first in a high school wrestling meet.

“It meant a lot to me,” he said. “The coaches vote on it. Of course, they thought I was good, so, yeah, it meant a lot to get it.

“I felt like I wrestled pretty good. I’ve been working really hard all summer so I expected to do good today. Beating him was one of my goals this year. Once I got the second takedown I knew I could take him down and ride him to the score.”

Weaver in Tallassee Duals

TALLASSEE – The Weaver wrestling team went 3-2 Saturday in the Tallassee Duals and came within a tiebreaker of scoring a fourth victory.

The Bearcats defeated Beauregard (63-10), Smiths Station B (84-0) and Prattville Christian (60-24), but lost on a tiebreaker to Holtville (43-42) and host Tallassee (41-33).

Reigning 106 state champion Nick Souder, Kyle Clapper, Collin Allison, Caleb Allison and Chase Rodgers were all 5-0 for Weaver.

The Holtville match was decided by most first points scored (Holtville won 8-4). The Bearcats missed out on taking down Tallassee when the Allisons won matches but couldn’t complete pins when they had their opponents in peril several times.

Still, Caleb won his bout 5-2 and Collin won 11-2.

“We should have been 5-0, but our youth and lack of experience is seriously exposed in dual meets right now,” Weaver coach Andy Fulmer said.

Ohatchee’s Pitts wins in Panther Classic

PELHAM – Ohatchee’s Hayden Pitts won the 170-pound division title and the Indians finished seventh as a team at the Leslie Burnett Memorial Panther Classic.

Pitts scored three pins in the championship bracket. The Indians placed four other wrestlers in the top five of their weight classes – Reed Hill (fifth, 106); Payton Marrs (fourth, 113); Aaron Woodall (fifth, 195) and Caleb Montgomery (third, 220).
