‘Big’ scramble seeks players

Second annual event to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Alabama

By East Alabama Sports Today

Valerie Shannon says her organization is still in “learning mode” when it comes to putting on golf tournaments, but every year adds to the experience.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Alabama holds its big golf fundraiser — appropriately named Big Golf Classic – Sept. 19 at Twin Bridges Golf Club.

Entry fee for the four-man scramble is $75 per player or $280 per team and sponsorship opportunities ranging from $100 to $5,000 are available.

Proceeds directly benefit school and community based mentoring programs for local youth in Calhoun and four neighboring counties. The upper level of support provides one year of professional mentoring services for five children.

“We’re preventative,” said Shannon, the BBBS Northeast Alabama executive director. “We want to try to prevent kids from taking the wrong path. We want to support them while they’re young so we inspire them to be good citizens, stay in school, do right.

“Just in my experience, it works. Mentoring is the only thing that’s really going to change the behavior of a child.”

Last year’s inaugural Big event was played on a Friday in August, drew 10 teams and raised nearly $5,000. This year, with a later date and Saturday morning start, organizers are hoping to raise $10,000.

The group held a three-man tournament for its Calhoun County branch at Pine Hill in the spring that raised $3,000.

“We’re still in the learning mode,” Shannon said. “Last year was a great day, went well. We did have rain that delayed us a little bit, but everybody seemed to have a good time.”
