All-Sports awards up for grabs

Both boys and girls races are close, but Oxford has a comfortable combined margin

The final two Calhoun County Tournaments of the season this weekend not only will crown the final county champions of 2014-15, they will determine the best boys, girls and overall athletics programs in the county this athletics year.
All the contenders for the County All-Sports Award recognized by EASportsToday.com will be in action this week as the softball tournament gets underway today at Oxford Lake and the boys golf championship tees off Friday at Pine Hill Country Club.
Both boys and girls all-sports races are close, although Oxford has created some separation from Alexandria in the combined standings.
The standings are determined by awarding points to each team’s finish in their respective Calhoun County Tournaments — 15 for first, 14 for second, etc., (no points are awarded to a program that doesn’t field a qualifying team).
The county holds formal championships in basketball, baseball, cross country, golf, softball, track and field, volleyball and wrestling.
Oxford is the defending champion in the boys golf tournament and currently holds a 5.5-point lead over Alexandria in the boys standings.
The Yellow Jackets have won the wrestling championship, finished second in baseball and were third in both track and cross country. The Valley Cubs won baseball and were second in basketball. Both are contenders in golf, but White Plains is considered the favorite.
The girls race is extremely close, with Jacksonville holding a 1.5-point edge over Oxford going into the softball tournament that is considered a wide-open affair. The Golden Eagles won volleyball and was second in basketball and cross country. The Lady Jackets finished second in volleyball and track.
White Plains is seeded No. 1 in the softball tournament, with Alexandria No. 2 and Oxford No. 3.
