Jacksonville’s appeal of AHSAA penalties for the school’s football program was denied at the District 6 level on Wednesday, so school officials will take their appeal to the Central Board on Oct. 8.
Jacksonville principal Jonathan Skinner released a statement Friday.
“Jacksonville High School thanks the members of the District Board for their time and for (haring) our appeal,” Skinnr’s statement read. “We respectfully disagree with the District Board’s decision and will appeal it to the Central Board of Control, in accordance with the rules of the Alabama High School Athletic Association. We will continue to present our arguments to the Central Board and look forward to that opportunity. We remain confident in the merits of our position.
“Throughout this process, our priority has been and will remain the well-being of our students, coaches, our student-athletes, and their families. Out of respect for the students involved and the ongoing proceedings, we will not comment further at this time.”
The school’s appeal to the AHSAA is separate from a lawsuit filed Wednesday by Jacksonville head coach Jeremy Sullivan, volunteer assistant coach Phileepae Holloway and parents representing two players. Among other things, the suit seeks an emergency injunction against the AHSAA’s penalties, a ruling that the AHSAA rule germane to the case is unconstitutional plus compensatory damages.
On Sept. 24, the AHSAA placed Jacksonville’s football program on restrictive probation, making the Golden eagles ineligible for this season’s playoffs. The AHSAA also levied a one-year suspension for Sullivan and Holloway and ruled two players ineligible to compete for Jacksonville High School.
