GADSDEN — The Oxford Yellow Jackets had a bagful of turnovers and even more fouls Tuesday night, but they also had Jakolbie McClendon and a stout defense to save the day.

McClendon scored 12 points, but he also grabbed 20 rebounds, dished five assists and came up with six steals as the Jackets overcame a lot of adversity in beating Southside 46-35.

The Jackets had 17 turnovers and an unfavorable 24-10 foul differential, but overcame those obstacles by playing tough defense and used a tight full-court press in the second half to keep their hosts at bay.

“I am learning how to be a pressing coach,” Oxford coach Joel VanMeter said. “A lot of times on the road I do not want to go out and press a lot and get into foul trouble. It did not matter tonight as we were in foul trouble anyway.”

Oxford held Southside to only 11 field goals for the game. The disparity in fouls and turnovers created by officials calling illegal screens brought the Jackets’ offense to a grinding halt in the first half and they trailed 18-16 at the break.

“It is like that playing on the road,” Van Meter said. “I told the kids the only reason we were able to win the game was because of their defense, their rebounding and because of their toughness. I was so proud of them. Three weeks ago we probably would have folded up with all the things that were going against us. We learned from it and we battled our way through it.”

As slowly as things went for the Jackets in the first three quarters, they erupted for 18 points in the fourth to pull away.

Jalen Moore had two driving layups, Daunte Lauderdale two put-backs and Kaleb Kidd a huge 3-pointer to lead the fourth-quarter surge. Kidd finished with 11 points and Querrion Mason added 10 points and six rebounds.

Zachery Lackey had four points and five rebounds off the bench, providing a presence down low when Lauderdale was on the bench in foul trouble.

“Zach gives us a physical presence inside and he can score,” VanMeter said. “He needs to learn how to not foul and learn how to practice. He gives us something off the bench that we did not have last year. I was real pleased with the way he played tonight.”

Lincoln 71, Ohatchee 34

OHATCHEE – Tyler Hemphill hit six of seven 3-point shots, Dee Whiteside scored a double-double and Lincoln held its hosts scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Hemphill finished with 24 points and five steals, while Whiteside had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Zay Caldwell and Danny Bradford both had eight points and eight steals.

Two elements were the key to victory, Golden Bears coach Rush Rutledge said.

“We shot the ball better tonight with better ball movement,” he said. “And our press was the deciding factor in the game.”

Owen Hale led Ohatchee with 10 points.

Faith Christian 59, Wellborn 54

Logan Williamson and Caleb McCord combined for 23 points in the first half as the Lions opened an eight-point halftime lead and held on to bounce back from a lopsided loss the night before.

Willamson, who finished with a game-high 19, had three of Faith’s four 3-pointers in the first half and wound up with four in the game. McCord finished with 15 points and Josiah McDaniel had 12.

Corri Tignor led Wellborn with 13 points, 10 in the fourth quarter as the Panthers tried to mount a rally.
