Anniston focused on defense

ALEXANDRIA – Raven Cooley led three Anniston scorers in double figures with 20 points, but the element of the game Bulldogs coach Eddie Bullock wanted to talk about after the game Tuesday night was defense.

See, the Bulldogs weren’t particularly sharp on offense even though they handled Alexandria 63-24, but Bullock has long been of the mindset that good defense can get a team through any slow offensive day.

“Our concentration is on defense,” Bullock said. “We put a lot of emphasis on playing man-to-man defense and trying to get our press right for later on, so that’s what we’re working on. We can score points; I’ve got four girls who can shoot it really well, but they get caught up and shoot 3-pointers. That’s what happened to us in the first half instead of concentrating on defense.

“My point of emphasis is trying to get them mentally ready to play defense every game, because if we shoot the ball like that against good teams we’ll get beat, so the point of emphasis is you’ve got to play defense every night.”

The defense the Bulldogs did play Tuesday night forced Alexandria into 21 turnovers and held the Valley Cubs out of double digits in every quarter.

In addition to Cooley, Kiyana Bullock scored 14 and Miajah Bullock scored 12.

Kaityn Brown led Alexandria with 13 points. She did most of her scoring from the free throw line, where she was nine of 15 for the game.

Piedmont 50, White Plains 38

PIEDMONT — Riesha Thompson led three Piedmont scorers in double figures with 13 points. Bre Green scored half of her 10 points in the first quarter when the Bulldogs opened a 13-4 lead. Breanna Brazier had 11 points.

Shelby Wood led White Plains with 12 points.

Faith Christian 49, Wellborn 24

Madison Stephens scored 12 of her 21 points in the first half as Faith cruised to victory. The game was tight early, but Stephens scored eight in the second quarter as the Lions pulled away.

Dymond Myles led Wellborn with 14 points.

Southside 39, Oxford 32

GADSDEN — The Lady Jackets led all the way until midway through the fourth quarter. Eight different players scored for Oxford, led by Tremeria Britt’s eight. Winter Taylor added 5 points. Southside’s Lindsey Hindsman led all scorers with 16 points.

Ohatchee 44, Lincoln 9

OHATCHEE – Morgan Lee scored 19 points and Faith Walker added seven as the Lady Indians swamped undermanned Lincoln. The Golden Bears were coming off a close to Weaver the day before.
