ANNISTON — Count Taylor McCullum stunned after Friday’s first-round play of the Wilfred Galbraith Invitational.

It’s no shocker that he leads by two strokes. He led after the first go-round at Anniston Country Club two years ago.

Friday’s shocker came in the fact that he was the only golfer to shoot under par.

McCullum, an ACC member who lives in Birmingham, shot 1-under-par 69 to lead five golfers tied for second by two strokes.

Defending champion Jacob LeCroy, former ACC pro Kevin Daugherty, Tanner Wells and Andrew Brooks shot 1-over 71.

Reigning Calhoun County Tour player of the year and current points leader Ty Cole, Gary Wigington and Dustin Travis lurk at 72.

McCullum expressed surprise that he was the only player under par. It didn’t hurt that his was among the last groups to play, and he played his entire round after an hour-and-10-minute delay for weather that included a downpour.

“We actually got lucky,” McCullum said. “It rained for the first little bit when we started, but it was pretty good.

“It was scorable. I wish I’d gotten a little better. because it was soft. It wasn’t easy, but there was no rain or wind.”

As for the groupd at 71, the delay came at different times. Brooks’ group had just finished playing No. 16 when the air horn sounded, calling players off of the course.

“I’m proud of my score,” he said. “I bogeyed the last hole, so it kind left a sour taste in my mouth there at the end, but all in all, I probably would’ve taken a 71 before I teed it up on No. 1.”

Wells resumed play on No. 5 after the delay and bogeyed three of the next four holes hit rebounded with back-to-back birdies on the back nine. He also birdied No. 17.

He said he’s not shocked to see so few players under par.

“It’s really wet out there,” Wells said. “It’s kind of an equalizer for the longer hitters, I guess, but three greens are slow for here. … Three-putts were out there because you think they’re going to be fast down the hill, but they’re five feet short.”
