Spring roundup

White Plains’ girls take sectional for ninth tourney victory, and Weaver’s boys earn first tourney win with sectional title. Alexandria’s Stokes and Piedmont’s Wood win medalist honors. WP girls, boys advance in soccer playoffs plus lots of softball.

Golf

Monday’s sectional action saw White Plains’ girls continue their winning ways, and Weaver’s boys got their first-ever tournament victory.

White Plains’ girls made it nine tournament titles this season by winning the Class 4A-5A, Section 3 tourney at Silver Lakes.

Alexandria finished second, also securing a spot in the substate round Monday at Florence, Jasmine Stokes finished as low medalist at 71.

Led by Maylee Steward at 83, White Plains’ girls shot 249. Aubree Cobb shot 82, and Cam McElroy shot 84.

Alexandria shot 278, including Alana Prickett’s 96 and a 111 from Olivia Carpenter. 

Weaver’s boys shot 340 to beat Vinemont by eight shots in the Class 3A, Section 3 tourney at Twin Bridges. Piedmont’s Caden Wood finished as low medalist at 73, and the Bulldogs finished fourth to claim a team spot in the substrate round.

Weaver’s Aiden Hansen shot a team-best 82 and finished tied for third with Hanceville’s Jackson Creek and Ohatchee’s Lyndon Williams, who qualified for substate as an individual.

Weaver’s Caden Watts shot 85, Dylan Brown 86 and John-Curtis Reeves 87.

Piedmont shot 362, including a 95 from Kane Stanford and 97s from Chase Kirkpatrick and Bentley Chandler.   

Vinemont and Locust Fork also qualified for substate as teams.

Soccer

WHITE PLAINS GIRLS 4, ONEONTA 0: Layla Garcia scored four goals, and the Wildcats got their first-ever playoff victory in girls’ soccer to advance in the Class 4A playoffs. White Plains will play host to Mars Hill Bible in the quarterfinals at a date to be determined. Garcia stands at 61 goals on the season.

WHITE PLAINS BOYS 6, HOKES BLUFF 3: Anthony Osorto led the Wildcats with four goals and an assist, and Bruce Downey scored two goals. The Wildcats will play host to Mars Hill Bible in the quarterfinals at a date to be determined. Orsoto stands at 36 goals on the season, and Downey has 23.

Softball

WHITE PLAINS 8, PLEASANT VALLEY 3: Carli Fritts went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs, and White Plains upped to 25-20.

Sara Kate Adams went 2-for-2 with three runs. Karli Otwell and Jaylie Holt had an RBI apiece, and Piper Thompson had a single and two runs.

Fritts got the win, allowing eight hits with no walks and no earned runs allowed and nine strikeouts. 

Pleasant Valley’s Lilly Robinson went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Alexa Cranmer had a single and two runs, and Charlee Grogan had an RBI.

SOUTHSIDE 3, OXFORD 1: Southside’s Paxton Huddleston had two RBIs, and Lauren McKee went 2-for-4 with a triple. Alexandra Machen had a double and a run.

Raynlee Daugherty got the win, allowing seven hits, three walks and one earned run with three strikeouts. Huddleston pitched a perfect inning of relief.

Oxford’s Koriyah Kimbrough had a single and an RBI, and Madison Murphy went 2-for-4 with a double. Mariana Becerra pitched a solid outing, allowing six hits, no walks and one earned run with five strikeouts in seven innings.

WELLBORN 8, WESTBROOK CHRISTIAN 7: Wellborn scored four runs in the last two innings, including two in the seventh to get its seventh win of the season and second in three games.

Delilah Talley’s RBI single tied the game, and Peyton Wilson followed with a walk-off single.

Talley finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run, and Wilson went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Brylee Ward went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and a run. Braelyn Bean went 2-for-4 with three runs.

Westbrook’s Brooklyn Stewart went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Audry Snead went 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI. Aleya Crossley went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, and Parker Borders went 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI.

Maddie Whitt went 2-for-4 with a double.

CHEROKEE COUNTY 8, OHATCHEE 2: Cherokee County’s Isabella Patterson went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, and Emma Hill went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Brooklynn Bruce went 1-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, and Sofie Dawson went 1-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.

Hill got the win, allowing two hits with eight strikeouts in six innings.

Ohatchee’s Blaze Steward and Annie Cox each had a single and an RBI, and Reese Steward went 2-for-3 with a run.

CEDAR BLUFF 5, JACKSONVILLE CHRISTIAN 0: Cedar Bluff’s Kylie Vadon and Rylie Walker each went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Paityn Walker went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs, and Makayla Kimmons had a double.

Kimmons pitched a three-hitter with three strikeouts. 

JCA’s Sophie Williams, Addy Lee and Carlie Chesson had a single apiece, and Williams allowed nine hits, three earned runs with one walk and six strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.=]’

HOKES BLUFF 10, PIEDMONT 7: Addison Simmons went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run, and Hokes Bluff upped to 20-14. 

Makenna Bennich had a double, two RBIs and a run. Rylee Hill went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI, and Lacey Grace Hall went 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run and an RBI.

Piedmont’s Kaelyn Greene went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and two runs, and Kaylie Wood went 1-for-4 with three RBIs.

Keagan Rogers went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Nakia Bothwell went 2-for-3 with a double and a run, and Cadence Buttram went 2-for-4 with a run.

RANBURNE 5, VICTORY CHRISTIAN 4: K.K. Rollins went 2-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI, and Ranburne improved to 16-14.

Addison Gibbs had a double and an RBI, and Kamryn Jenkins had a double and a run. Peyton Smith had a single and an RBI.

Gibbs pitched a complete game, allowing four hits with no earned runs and two strikeouts.  

GLENCOE 5, CLEVELAND 3: VIctoria Romano had a double and two RBIs, and R Brothers had a single and two RBIs while Glencoe upped to 13-16.

Kynsley Freeman went 2-for-4, and Katy Talbot had a single and two runs.

Freeman pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts.
