Spring roundup

Father, son come up victorious in debuts with WP. Clayton wins in Westbrook debut. Piedmont, Southside and Wellborn win in baseball. Oxford, Woodland and Hokes Bluff win in softball. WP’s girls, Weaver boys win in soccer.

WHITE PLAINS — Logan Laube went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run,  and White Plains beat Weaver 8-1 on Thursday to give Jameson Edwards his first victory as the Wildcats’ head coach.

Edwards coached at Jacksonville before becoming White Plains’ skipper.

Crew Martin went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run, and Brock Ward went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run.

Beau Madrigal singled and scored two runs and struck out three batters while allowing two hits and one walk in 2 2/3 innings. 

Walker Edwards got the win in his father’s White Plains debut, allowing one hit and two walks with six strikeouts in four innings.

WESTBROOK CHRISTIAN 8, SARDIS 5: Dalton Helms had a double and two RBIs, and Westbrook gave Ricky Ray Clayton a victory in his first game as the Warriors head coach.

Clayton is a former Etowah assistant who also coached the Sunbelt League’s Choccolocco Monsters the past two summers, winning a league championship in 2024.

Westbrook also got a double, RBI and run from Brody Blevins, and Brodie Johnson reached on a single and two walks with a run and RBI.

Emmett Daniel pitched three innings with seven strikeouts, five walks and one earned run. Sawyer Stewart got the win, allowing one walk and no runs with two strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings.

PIEDMONT 7, ETOWAH 3: Cole Austin went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, and Piedmont opened the season with a victory.

Carson Sanders went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and Jaxson Howard went 2-for-3 with two runs.

Austin got the win, allowing four hits, no earned runs and one walk with eight strikeouts.

BRIARWOOD CHRISTIAN 6, OXFORD 4: Oxford’s Rocco Maniscalco went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, and Charlie Maniscalco went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

The Yellow Jackets also got a double apiece from Bryson Bradford and Zakaree Newton.

Marcus Lawler pitched two innings, allowing one hit and one walk with three strikeouts.

SOUTHSIDE 3, BOAZ 1: Southside’s Carson McGraw went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, and Abe Martin added a single and a run. 

Shelby Houston hit a double and got the win, allowing three hits, one walk and one earned run with six strikeouts in four innings.

WELLBORN 12, CEDAR BLUFF 2: Ashton Woodard and Tanner Ingram combined to allow two hits, and Wellborn opened the season with a victory.

Ingram struck out nine batters and allowed no hits with five walks in 3 2/3 innings. He also went 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs.

Zack Pressley went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and a run, and J.D. Talley went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

Softball

OXFORD 3, ASHVILLE 2: Cadence Kennedy’s RBI double plated Emma Tims-Becerra and Madison Murphy in the eighth inning, and Oxford won in walk-off fashion at home.

Oxford’s Haleigh Pruitt hit an RBI triple, and Charleigh Trotter hit a double.

Jayla Jackson pitched the complete eight innings, spreading out 10 hits with two strikeouts and no walks. She allowed one earned run

WOODLAND 16, WELLBORN 0: Woodland’s Kinsley McDaniel went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs, and Alyssa Taylor went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run..

Lucy Phillips had a double and two RBIs, and Maddie Fordham added a double, two runs and an RBI. Allie Puckett went 2-for-2 with a double and a run, and Skylar Vann went 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI.

Railey Williams allowed two hits with eight strikeouts in four innings.

Wellborn’s Braelyn Bean and Raelyn Webb hit a single apiece.

HOKES BLUFF 6, PLEASANT VALLEY 3: Mazley Ball homered with two RBIs, and Lacey Grace Hall hit a solo home run as Hokes Bluff won its season opener.

The Eagles also got a double apiece from Addison Simmons, Lainey Kate Beggs, Rylee Hill, Pressley Wall and Makenna Bennich. Hill went 3-for-4 and scored two runs.

Hall pitched a complete game, allowing 10 hits, two walks and three earned runs with nine strikeouts in seven innings.

Pleasant Valley’s Alexa Cranmer went 3-for-4 with a double and a run, and Hanna Henry went 2-for-3. Cailey Almaroad had a single and an RBI.

Soccer

WHITE PLAINS GIRLS 5, WEAVER 1: White Plains’ Layla Garcia scored four goals, and Ximena Sanchez scored one.

WEAVER BOYS 3, WHITE PLAINS 0: Goalkeeper Joe Vines had 29 saves, and Weaver got two goals from Carsyn Pippen. Uli Lazcano scored one goal.
