JACKSONVILLE — Glencoe’s turned things around at Christmas, and life since then has felt like Christmas for the Yellow Jackets.
Kinlee Montgomery scored a game-high 23 points, and Glencoe held off Fyffe 51-46 in Wednesday’s Northeast Regional Class 3A semifinals in Pete Mathews Coliseum.
The Yellow Jackets (21-8), making their 16th Northeast Regional appearance, will play in their ninth regional final Tuesday at 4 p.m. against the Westbrook Christian-Sylvania winner. Glencoe seeks its second Northeast Regional title and first since beating Altamont in 2009.
“This is a program that belongs at Jacksonville,” Glencoe coach Blake Badgett said. “We always talk about that, and now we’re one game away from getting us back to Birmingham.
“We’ve been one time in program history, so we’re trying to make some history there.”
Glencoe has won 14 of 15 games since a 7-7 start, which included a four-game losing streak. Montgomery sees a 62-27 victory over Saks on Dec. 30 as the team’s awakening.
“The Saks game helped,” she said. “It gave us more confidence that we know we can go out there and still win ballgames.”
Badgett said the turnaround seemed to boil down to opponents focusing their defensive efforts on Montgomery.
“I’ve known them for a long time, and I’m going to tell you, I just think it ticks them off when people just try to play Kinlee,” he said. “Kinlee had to overcome that, too.
“They’re going to guard you, and that’s a reward. You’ve earned that. That means, for everybody else, that’s your opportunity to go.”
Katy Talbot was provided the significant other Wednesday with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
“We’ve seen a lot of junk defenses in the last two or three weeks to try to eliminate Payton (Gray) and Kinlee,” Badgett said. “Katy has run out there and scored 20 in several games. …
“We embrace that. We work on that. “
It worked to help Glencoe prevail against Fyffe in a game that saw 10 lead changes and five ties. Glencoe held the biggest lead, seven points, at 7:01 of the third quarter.
Led by Sam Galloway’s 14 points and 13 with nine rebounds from Maylee Totherow, Fyffe rallied to lead by three at 7:39 of the fourth.
‘We kind of talked before the game, just fight for four more quarters,” Badgett said. “Fight for four more practices. We’ve got four seniors, so that was our mantra right before we went out.”

Westbrook Christian 57, Collinsville 45

JACKSONVILLE — Westbrook Christian’s boys have earned their third third shot at a Northeast Regional title, and the Warriors are in a mood to make history.
“We really want people to look back, for people coming to Westbrook, and this be the year that people realize that the culture has changed around our basketball program.” junior guard Titus Jones said.
Bo Kilgo led five Warriors in double figures with 13 points, and Wesbrook Christian beat Collinsville 57-45 in Wednesday’s Northeast Regional Class 3A semifinals in Pete Mathews Coliseum.
The Warriors advanced to Tuesday’s 5:45 p.m. final against the Geraldine-Whitesburg Christian winner.
Westbrook Christian is making its seventh appearance in the regional and third in the regional final. The Warriors lost to Lanett in 2014 and Piedmont in 2015.
The boys punched their ticket to the regional final just ahead of the Westbrook girls’ regional semifinal against Sylvania.
‘We’re about to watch our girls play right here, and our teams are getting better and better,” Westbrook boys coach Neal Wester said. “Our program is coming on, and to get that next step would be a tremendous high.”
Balance helped get the Warriors to their latest shot at a berth in the Final 48. Bradey Carden and Brodey Wood added 12 points apiece Wednesday, and Westbrook got 10 apiece from Jones and Case Burton.
They overcame 18 points from Collinsville’s Mason McAteer and 10 with seven rebounds from Sylas Adams.
Westbrook led most of the way and by as many as 18 points.
The Warriors got to the foul line, hitting 19 of 27 free throws compared to Collinsville’s 7-for-10 clip. Westbrook’s bench outscored Collinsville’s 10-0.
“They’ve got a good team. Give them credit,” Wester said. “There was a reason they were hanging there. In the second half, I thought our defense kind of wore on them a little bit.”
