ANNISTON — Weaver head football coach Kenneth Cofer will return to the sideline for the Bearcats’ Oct. 3 game at Glencoe after missing two games on administrative leave.
The Calhoun County Board of Education approved action on Cofer’s leave and pending return after discussing in executive session at Thursday’s special-called board meeting, which also saw the board discuss and approve a budget.
Cofer missed Weaver’s 21-13 loss to Ohatchee on Sept. 19 and will miss Friday’s game at Winterboro. Current assistant coach Michael Spurling will continue serve as interim head coach until Cofer returns to work Oct. 1.
Cofer went on paid leave after what he acknowledged was a verbal exchange with a parent at a middle school game. He’ll return to work after serving three days on unpaid leave, he said.
Calhoun County Schools superintendent Dr. Tony Willis met with Cofer briefly after Thursday’s board meeting then acknowledged Cofer’s pending return.
“We plan for him to be back on the sideline a week from Friday,” Willis said. “I can’t really be going into what people’s individual disciplinary actions are, but he’ll be back on the sideline. He won’t be there this week, but he’ll be there next week.
“We think he’s a good man. We think he does a lot of good things. We look forward to getting back to some normalcy.”
