OXFORD — Mason Mims completed 11 of 13 passes for 184 yards and a touchdown, and Oxford handled visiting Huffman 52-0 in Friday’s Class 6A, Region 6 action on Lamar Field.
With each victory, Oxford (4-0, 2-0 region) notches closer to matching the 2019 state-championship team’s 7-0 start. The Yellow Jackets broke into the Alabama Sports Writers Association rankings this week, at No. 10 in 6A.
Oxford’s next three games are Pinson Valley and Hartselle on the road and Pell City at home, followed by an open date before playing host to top-ranked Clay-Chalkville on Oct. 20.
Camare Hampton caught five passes for 108 yards and a touchdown against Huffman, and Judd Syer caught three passes for 27 yards.
D.K. Wilson rushed for three touchdowns, and Jaydon Thomas rushed for two.
Keenan Britt led the defense with seven tackles.
PIEDMONT TOPS PLAINVIEW: Piedmont faced enough of a challenge, replacing nine starters on offense and six on defense. Facing reigning Class 4A runnerup Cherokee County and Class 3A No. 8 Sylvania in the first two games didn’t help, either.
The Bulldogs rebounded to bag their first victory over first-year coach Jonathan Miller on Friday, 24-13 in a Class 3A, Region 6 game at Plainview. For Miller, it was career win No. 101.
Piedmont improved to 1-2, 1-1 region.
Dontavious Jordan rushed for 155 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown run at 2:53 of the first quarter.
Quarterback Cole Wilson completed eight of 13 passes for 93 yards, with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Rollie Pinto.
Pinto also also scored on a 40-yard run, and Caiden Cardelli kicked a 31-yard field goal.
Piedmont outrushed Plainview 268 yards to 160 and outgained Plainview 361-214 overall. The Bulldogs also had no turnovers.
PLEASANT VALLEY 3-0: The Raiders beat Holly Pond 15-14 to improve to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in Class 2A, Region 6. The 3-0 start marks the Raiders’ first since 2007.
Added to two wins to end the 2022 season, Pleasant Valley has a five-game winning streak.
“That has never been done at PV,” Pleasant Valley coach Jonathan Nix said. “It was not a pretty win at all, but our players played with a ton of grit and fought though so much adversity tonight.”
The Raiders came to win, winning the opening toss, deferring to the second half then recovering an onsides kick to set up Holt Bentley’s 45-yard touchdown run.
Braxton Salster’s 33-yard pass to Hunter Sparks set up Bentley’s 11-yard touchdown run, and Pleasant Valley led 12-6 at halftime.
The Raiders kicked a 37-yard field goal after Bentley returned the second-half kickoff 44 yards to Holly Pond’s 30-yard line.
Pleasant Valley still had to make three defensive stands to preserve the victory. The Raiders stopped Holly Pond on downs at their 3- and 1-yard lines before Holly Pond stopped Bentley for a safety to make it 15-14.
Connon Crump was credited with what Nix called a “huge” quarterback pressure to force an incompletion. Jeremiah Jones and Salster came up big on another goal-line stand.
After the free kick, Holly Pond moved to Pleasant Valley’s 13 before Sparks intercepted a Holly Pond pass to clinch it.
Bentley finished with 98 total yards and two touchdowns, and Salster accounted for 107 total yards, including 84 on 4-for-7 passing.
WELLBORN GETS FIRST WIN: Jabari Williams rushed for 228 yards and two touchdowns, and the Panthers rushed for 463 of their 526 total yards while picking up their first win of the season in their first Class 3A, Area 4 game.
C.J. Hubbard added 136 yards rushing and two touchdowns while accounting for six tackles and an interception on defense.
Quarterback Noah Screws passed for 63 and two touchowns and rushed for a score, and Brennan Talley caught two passes for 51 yards and two touchdowns. Raymond Williams added 24 yards rushing and a touchdown.
Jackson Newton led Wellborn’s defense with 11 tackles and blocked punt to set up a touchdown.
“It’s a relief, but we lost to two good teams,” Wellborn coach Jeff Smith said. “Anniston and Ohatchee, both of them are good. We’re still trying to find our identity.”
CHEROKEE COUNTY ROLLS: Class 4A No. 2 Cherokee County rolled for 563 rushing yards in a 49-21 rout of No. 8 Oneonta, a 4A semifinalist in 2022.
Senior running back Jacob Cornejo compiled 407 yards on 26 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns. His rushing performance is the 20th best all-time in Alabama High School Athletic Association history.
Parrish’s Tony Dixon holds the record with 531 yards on 21 carries against Hubbertville in an 81-58
victory in 2003.
Cornejo’s performance included touchdown runs of one and 73 yards.
Keyshawn Woods added 84 yards on nine totes with three scores as the Warriors improved to 4-0, 2-0 in 4A, Region 6.
The Warriors extended their lead to 35-14 at halftime on a Carson Tittle 32-yard touchdown run and Tae Diamond’s 11-yard score. Jace Turner and Tripp Davis both had an interception to help lead the
Warrior defense.
SPRING GARDEN REBOUNDS: After losing two games in row for the first time since
2017, Spring Garden rebounded in a big way on homecoming Friday night, beating Victory Christian 41-7.
Chapel Pope caught passes for 124 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 112 yards on seven carries and scored another touchdown in leading the Panthers (2-2, 1-1) to a Class 1A, Region 6 football win.
Pope got Spring Garden on the board with 10:14 to go in the first quarter on an 8-yard run. Following Clayton Sadler’s 1-yard score at the 4:05 mark of the first, Pope scored again on a 36-yard touchdown
pass from Noah Barber.
The Panthers led 20-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Connor Bates, who ran for 102 yards on 10 carries, accounted for two touchdowns in the second quarter on runs of five and 19 yards. Pope added a 2-point conversion on the first, which helped Spring Garden post a 35-0 lead at halftime.
Bates also had an interception on defense.
WESTBROOK CHRISTIAN REBOUNDS: A week after rallying from a 26-6 deficit to lose 34-33 at Ohatchee, Westbrook Christian downed Glencoe 56-34.
Greyson Carroll carried 17 times for 151 yards and three touchdowns. He also completed eight of 16 passes for 122 yards and two touchdowns.
Hunter Arnold rushed eight times for 94 yards and two touchdowns, and Brody Johnson had a 2-yard touchdown run.
Cooper Greer caught four passes for 57 yards and a touchdown, and Lamycal Michell caught a 41-yard touchdown pass.
LINCOLN 24, ALEXANDRIA 17: Lincoln rallied from a 17-9 deficit with two fourth-quarter touchdowns to win in Class 5A, Region 6 play.
Alexandria (0-4, 0-2) built its lead on Cole Wheeler’s 10-yard touchdown pass to DaMarcus Williams in the second quarter, Cleat Forrest’s 46-yard field goal in the third and M.J. Morris’ 19-yard touchdown run in the fourth.
Alexandria outgained Lincoln 341 yards to 286 but committed four turnovers, including three fumbles.
Morris rushed 28 times for 191 yards and a touchdown. He also caught two passes for 43 yards. Williams led the defense with eight tackles.
THUNDERING ON: Noah Lee completed 12 of 21 passes for 273 and five touchdowns as Jacksonville Christian routed visiting Victory of Columbus, Miss., 47-0 to improve to 5-0. He also intercepted a pass on defense.
Travis Barnhill had four catches for 63 yards and a touchdown, and Jesse Gannaway had four catches for 133 yards and three scores. Caleb Stallings caught two passes for 54 yards and a touchdown and rushed for two scores.
CLEBURNE COUNTY FALLS: The Tigers (2-1) suffered their first loss of the season in a late-added non-region game against Boaz, 35-21.
Carter Hughes led Cleburne County with 122 yards on nine rushes. Jake Dingler added 58 yards rushing, and Nathan Adams had 57. Cleburne County rushed for 288 yards on the night.
Quarterback Lyric Ware hit on 19 of 29 passes for 217 yards.
OHATCHEE FALLS: Class 3A No. 10 Ohatchee fell to No. 8 Sylvania in a key Class 3A, Region 6 showdown, 64-34, to move to 2-1 overall, 1-1 region. Jesse Baswell was a highlight for the Indians, rushing 10 times for 175 yards and three touchdowns. Jake Roberson completed six of 12 passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns, and Colby Hester caught five passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns. Baswell led the defense with 10 tackles, one for loss, and Nate Jones had nine stops.
RANBURNE FALLS: Kaide Garrett was the highlight for Ranburne in a 42-7 loss to reigning Class 2A runner up B.B. Comer, rushing 31 times for 156 yards and a touchdown. He also completed four of 13 passes for 22 yards. Curtis Daniel carried seven times for 44 yards. Ranburne is 2-2, 1-1 in Class 2A, Region 4.
