Piedmont dominates selections for Class 3A Region 6 All-Region Team; Hayes, Epps, Smith take home three of four top awards; Saks’ Doss POY in 3A Region 4

Class 3A state runner-up Piedmont picked up three of the four major player/coach awards and dominated the selections for the 3A Region 6 All-Region Team as selected by the coaches.

Record-setting quarterback Jack Hayes, a leading candidate to repeat as Class 3A Back of the Year and contender for Mr. Football, is the region Player of the Year. Linebacker Brody Epps is the Defensive Player of the Year and Steve Smith is Coach of the Year. Sylvania running back Braiden Thomas rounded out the major awards as Offensive Player of the Year.

Hayes reached the top of four major all-time state passing lists during the season. For the season he accounted for 4,859 yards — 3,267 passing, 1,592 rushing – and accounted for 60 touchdowns. Epps had a team-leading 122 tackles, including 11 for loss, and two fumble recoveries .

The Bulldogs had 14 other all-region players –  eight first-teamers and six honorable mentions.

Their all-region players are Max Hanson, Chance Murphy, Rhett Alford, Trevor Pike, Ish Bethel, ChrisJon Gurley, Cody Holloway and Sloan Smith. The honorable mentions selections included Jake Austin, Parker Thornton, Conner Williams, Trent Young, Luke Rhinehart and Thomas Propst.

Ohatchee had five all-region players and 10 total selections. 

The Indians’ all-region picks are Tyler Waters, Devin Howell, Chris Ferguson, Bryce Noah and Nate Jones. Their honorable mention picks are Elijah Engle, Jesse Baswell, Jayden Abernathy, Colby Hester and Tristan Kiker.

Including the four major award winners, 81 players and coaches were recognized on the team.

Class 3A Region 4

Saks’ Gavin Doss was named Region Player of the Year and was among 15 Calhoun County players named to the Class 3A Region 4 All-Region Team.

Doss was one of six Saks players to make the team. Wellborn had five players and Weaver had four. Dadeville dominated the team with eight players and the other three major award winners.
