It was a big night for Donoho’s Drew Williamson in a lot of ways.

The Falcons celebrated their senior scorer surpassing 1,000 career points earlier in the week before the game, then he went out and erupted for 47 points to set the school’s single-game scoring record in an 84-82 overtime area win over Winterboro.

“Drew went crazy tonight – and we needed every bit of it,” Donoho coach Korielle Beavers said.

Williamson reached the milestone with his 26th point in a 34-point effort against Woodland Monday night. He returned to the floor Thursday and broke the school record (40) set by Victoria O’Neill last year. He now has 1,055 career points.

“I had no idea until today,” Williamson said of the 1,000-point milestone. “I had a feeling it might happen this season. That was a goal of mine to get 1,000 points, but I didn’t know it’d be so early in the season. It was a great feeling. I’ve seen people around me do. It was a goal of mine. I’ve very glad I hit it.”

Williamson was getting his points in the first half, but he really heated up after halftime. He had 35 in the second half and overtime

He had 18 in the Falcons’ fourth-quarter rally and hit a layup in the closing seconds of regulation to send the game into overtime. He hit a floater late in the extra session to put the Falcons up one and then after Winterboro missed a shot Rich Goad hit the second of two free throws with seven seconds left for the final margin.

It was the Falcons’ third overtime in four games this season.

“I noticed from the start of the game they were going man,” Williamson said. “I started knocking my first couple shots down, started getting to the basket, and I kind of felt that groove all night.

“I didn’t know about the record until after the game. We were in the locker room and they were talking about it and one of the assistant coaches looked at me and gave me a little nod. I knew the school record was 40. It was actually a good friend of mine who had the record, so I wanted to get it this year.”
