In the fourth quarter when it was still anybody’s game, White Plains made it their own.

The Wildcats got the best of it at the start of the fourth quarter and carried it to a 57-49 victory over area top-seed Handley a week out from the area tournament.

They carried a one-point lead into the fourth quarter of a game that had seven lead changes to that point and scored the first eight points while holding the Tigers scoreless for the first four minutes of the quarter.

It never got closer than five the rest of the game.

“You know how Coach (Chris) Randall is,” sophomore forward Daniel Williams said. “At halftime he sat us all down and did what he does best and got us into the game, really, and made us realize that we can play better than we have in the first half and all season especially.

“In the fourth quarter after we got those big 3s to take the lead from two points to eight points, that’s really what got us going. It was just overall playing better, getting back on defense, boxing out, making big shots when it counted.”

The 3-ball was the shot of the day for the Wildcats, falling like the snowflakes that surprised the crowd outside after the game. They hit eight in the game, two each from four players.

Luke Bussey hit two in the first-quarter run that gave them an early 19-8 lead. Cole Senciboy nailed two in the third quarter — one that gave them the lead for good and one that extended it to six.

They opened the fourth quarter with one from Walker Osteen and a three-point play from Williams and they were off and running.

“Those two shots (by Senciboy) in the third gave us a little bit of confidence,” Randall said. “We went to the glass really hard in the third and they made us pay because we gave up too many transition buckets, so in the fourth we only sent Daniel to the glass and everybody else ran back. And then we didn’t turn it over.

“We controlled the tempo in the fourth quarter, shot selection was a lot better, possessions were longer and we got more out of them. This is the year every single game comes down to the fourth quarter. This gave us some confidence to make us believe we could beat a really good team.”

Osteen led the Wildcats with 15 points. Williams had 14 and Josh Wheeler had 10. Handley’s Rondai Banks led all scorers with 18 points.

White Plains will play Anniston in its Class 4A Area 9 tournament opener while Handley awaits the winner of the Munford-Cleburne County play-in game. Official pairings and game times will be announced next week.

“This gives us a huge confidence booster knowing we can play better than we think we can,” Williams said. “If we’d have played like this the whole season maybe the seedings would have turned out a whole lot different.”

WESTBROOK CHRISTIAN 59, FAITH CHRISTIAN 57 (OT): Evans Sizemore scored 14 of his 17 points in the second half to help the Warriors rally from a nine-point halftime deficit to force overtime, then they hit 5-of-7 free throws in the extra session to win.

Faith leading scorer Ethan Richerzhagen (25 points) and Yoshua Arevalo both fouled out in overtime, limiting the Lions’ options. Thomas Curlee returned to the Lions’ lineup after being out since the County Tournament with back issues and scored four points in “very limited” minutes in the game.

“We’ll try him more against Temple (Saturday), then hopefully turn him all the way up for the area tournament,” Faith coach Cory Hughes said. “I’m really excited about the post-season.”
