Cleburne County clinches top spot in area; Saks, PV both claim area victories, Westbrook challenges Sand Rock

Karley Boyd had 14 kills, Kynzi Hazzard had 10 and Libby Altman recorded 39 assists as Cleburne County swept Handley 3-0 to clinch the top seed and hosting rights in the area tournament.

The scores were 25-16, 25-17, 25-9.

Carlee Hiett and Kaden Pritchett had seven kills apiece for the Lady Tigers and Faith Brown had six.

Saks scores area win

Middle hitter/blocker Tamaryn Pierce had 23 kills, five blocks, six digs and two aces to lead Saks to a 3-1 Class 3A Area 9 victory over Wellborn.

Pierce is one of the Lady Wildcats’ three seniors and all three lived up to their roles. Outside hitter Kayleigh Thomas had four aces, four digs and a kill. Setter Stormy Nolen had 24 assists.

“At the beginning of this week I challenged our three seniors to step up and, wow, they’ve taken on the weight of the team and led us,” Saks coach Tim Beard said. “Kayleigh Thomas is our inspirational leader, Stormy Nolen controls our tempo and Tamaryn is our go-to player to get a kill, block or dig when we need it. All three have stepped up and pushed us to a higher level of play. I’m excited to see how far we can go.”

Westbrook challenges Sand Rock

Westbrook Christian gave Sand Rock all it could handle in a 3-1 area loss. The Lady Warriors dropped the second set 25-23 and won the third set 25-16 before Sand Rock closed it out 25-21.

“We fought very hard,” Westbrook coach Denise Mattison said. “It’s the first time in a while that we took a set from Sand Rock. We can compete. That’s what I’m trying to do here, change the culture of volleyball at Westbrook.”

Sophomore Raegan Harrell had 11 kills for Westbrook (10-7) while junior Brielle Wood had 22 assists and 18 digs.

PV sweeps Piedmont

Rylee Haynes scored 21 kills and Allie Bryant had 19 assists, six kills and 10 digs as Pleasant Valley swept Piedmont in an area match.
