Donoho, Alexandria appear headed for county seeding showdown after strong tournament showings

By East Alabama Sports Today

Donoho and Alexandria, the two teams expected to get the most consideration for the No. 1 seed at next week’s Calhoun County Tournament seeding meeting, went through pool play in their respective weekend tournaments undefeated before falling in the knockout round of the events..

Alexandria, which has seemed to find its stride after a slow start, defeated three ranked opponents in its Hartselle Tournament pool, then lost to the host team in straight sets 25-23, 25-19. Hartselle was ranked No. 8 in Class 6A.

In their pool matches, the Lady Cubs defeated 5A No. 6 Madison Academy (25-23, 25-20); 7A No. 4 Sparkman (25-20, 25-15); and 3A No. 4 Danville (25-19, 15-25, 15-6). Earlier in the week they took down a ranked Chelsea team.

“We had a great week, just ran out of gas in the gold bracket semis,” Alexandria coach Whitney Welch said.
