JACKSONVILLE –
Pleasant Valley bounced back from an opening-set loss and won an intense fifth set to beat Piedmont 3-2 Thursday night and maintain the balance of power in Class 3A Area 11 volleyball.

The Lady Raiders dropped the opening set 25-22, won the next two 25-21, 25-16, then lost a tight fourth set 26-24 before winning the clincher 15-13.

Rylee Haynes scored 26 kills and had a .392 attack percentage for PV and Rebekah Gannaway was solid on the backline with 28 digs.

“We didn’t have all our starters tonight, so the girls had to adjust and battle through,” PV coach Dana Bryant said. “They pulled together and played hard.”

Jaycee Glover led Piedmont with 25 assists, 15 digs and three aces. Lele Ridley had nine kills and six dogs.

Senior Night sweep

Donoho celebrated its Senior Night with a 3-0 area sweep of Faith Christian, 25-12, 25-12, 25-16.

All six of the Lady Falcons’ seniors contributed and combined for 12 kills, 23 digs, eight aces and four blocks. Maggie Wakefield was strong at the net with five kills and four blocks, Naira Rehman had 12 digs and three aces, and Yana Osovska had five kills and two aces.

“It was a good senior night matchup,” Donoho coach Jamie Clendenin said. “Senior wise, I was glad to get everybody in and give them a taste against a big crowd.”

This senior class has gone 128-53 over the last four years under Clendenin, been part of a state championship and a state runner-up the last two seasons and are currently ranked No. 1 in Class 1A this season with a 20-2 record.

“You look at the year we won state, for the majority of these girls it was their first year on varsity,” Clendenin said. “This senior-heavy group is pretty much what put Donoho back where it traditionally had been. Just a good group of kids.”

Alexandria gets 2

The time off paid off.

Alexandria coach Whitney Welch gave her Lady Cubs volleyball team the weekend off at the end of an emotional week and when they returned to the floor Thursday for the first time in a week they looked a lot crisper.

They swept Chelsea, the No. 4 team in Class 6A, 25-16, 25-21, handing the Lady Hornets only their second loss of the season, and then won their area opener over Lincoln, 25-17, 25-17, 25-8.

“We’ve gotten better this week for sure,” Welch said. “We controlled the ball really well tonight, which helped us offensively, and we also blocked well.

“We had a great few days of practice and I feel that we are playing much more fluidly at the moment. We’ve just got to keep it up.”

Alexandria, the No. 4 team in 5A, is now 12-5.
