BIRMINGHAM – Jammie Lett has always been a good iron player, but even he couldn’t believe how well he hit them Monday.

The Cider Ridge director of golf was as sharp as ever with that part of his game Monday and it carried him to an even-par 72 and share of the rain-interrupted first-round lead of the PGA Assistants National Championship qualifier at Pine Tree Country Club.

Lett is tied with Lindsey Harrison, recently of Vestavia Country Club, one shot ahead of Jake Greer of Mountain Brook and Farm Links’ Jax State grad Dylan Shephard. Jordan Debonis of The Ledges and Paxton Tidwell of Willow Point are another shot back.

“I’m still not making any putts, but I don’t know in my lifetime I’ve ever seen anyone hit an iron like I did today,” Lett said. “I probably hit nine, 10, 11 out of the fairway that I thought were going in. I hit it incredible with the irons. That’s what got me around the course today.”

The 23-player field is playing for two spots (and three alternates) into the PGA Assistants National Championship at the PGA Golf Club in Florida in November. Lett played in the main event as the No. 2 local qualifier in 2019.

UPDATE: Lett’s putter failed him after a 90-minute weather delay Tuesday and he missed the cut for alternates by one. Lett suffered four three-putts over his last seven holes, 38 putts total, and shot 76. Farm Links’ JSU grad Dylan Shephard and Jordan Debonis of The Ledges earned the two qualifying spots.)

With his sharp iron play Lett missed only one green in the round and made three birdies. His 34 putts were a point of annoyance, but he thinks he found something during a post-round session on the practice green.

“If I can get under 30 tomorrow I’ll have a chance to win,” he said. “I figured something out this afternoon.”

Harrison had six birdies and six bogeys.
