Okins leads four Calhoun County players into final round of Boys State Junior; plenty of local flavor in Alabama Open at Twin Bridges

By East Alabama Sports Today

POINT CLEAR – Nick Ledbetter knew he had to make something happen if he wanted to stick around in the 76th Alabama Boys State Junior Championship.

The Weaver golfer couldn’t have started better. He birdied three of his first four holes Wednesday at Lakewood Golf Club and made the cut on the number to join three White Plains players in Thursday’s final round.

The field went off to a shotgun start Wednesday due to weather and Ledbetter was sent out to open on 16. He birdied 16, 18 and 1 and wound up shooting even-par 70 for a two-day total of 147. Sixty-one players made the cut.

“It was pretty good,” Ledbetter said. “Yesterday I started off by missing three 10-footers in a row for birdie and today I started on the hole I made my first birdie on. Teeing off on that I knew what to do.

“Me and the guy I was playing with were like ‘it’s moving day today’ and he was like ‘yup, and we’re about to start moving big.’ Even if I didn’t make the birdie I just kept giving myself the chance to make them to go low.”

White Plains’ Kenny Okins shot a second-round 71 for a two-day total 140 to lead the group of Calhoun County golfers who made the cut. He and Ledbetter were going out for a little mini-golf challenge Wednesday night.

Okins was joined among the players who survived to Thursday’s final round by his White Plains teammates Peyton Bradley (70-74) and Wesley Jenkins (71-75). Okins and Bradley will be teammates on Southern Union’s start-up golf team this coming year.

Trussville’s Stuart Dickson shot 65 for the second day in a row and at 10-under 130 holds a one-shot lead over Paul Bruce of Guntersville.

White Plains’ Sawyer Edwards (75-75) and Gage Miller (72-80) missed the cut.
