Lions come up big

Munford knocks off second-seeded B.B. Comer in Talladega County Tournament, Rashard comes up big on defensive end

SYLACAUGA –
Munford pulled off the upset of the Talladega County Tournament so far when the Lions jumped out to a lead in overtime and held on to beat second-seeded B.B. Comer 67-65.

Dwight Moore led the Lions (8-7) with 18 points and 10 rebounds. He went 6-for-8 from the defensive side the board. Moore scored 11 points in the first half and finished with 18 in the game, including 6-of-8 from the free throw line. Connor Morgan had 16 points with five 3-pointers, Jaquan Anderson had 13 and Jay Tuck had 11.

Rashard Russell scored only four points, but he grabbed 12 rebounds and made three big defensive plays in the final 30 seconds of overtime to seal the win.

“I’m really happy for our kids,” Munford coach Michael Easley said. “Any time you knock off the No. 2 seed in the county tournament it’s a big deal. You have to give our kids credit – they fought for four quarters and an OT to get that one.”

Munford led 30-22 at halftime and led by six after three quarters. Moore’s layup with 30 seconds left in overtime put the Lions up for good 67-65.

Comer’s Chris Garrett tried to answer Moore’s bucket but his jumper defended by Russell missed the mark. Morgan rebounded, went the length of the court and fed it to Jay Tuck, who was fouled on the floor.

Tuck missed the free throw and the ball went out of bounds with five seconds left. Comer inbounded and got off another shot defender by Russell, and this time, he got the defensive rebound to seal the game.

“I thought our effort was great for four quarters,” Munford coach Michael Easley said. “We defended really well in the first half and had two guys really step up on the boards on the defensive end.”

The Lions (8-7) haven’t exactly been the sharpest shooting team since Christmas, but they broke out on this night with 10 3-pointers by three different players – Anderson, Morgan and Tuck.

They now await the winner of Talladega-Lincoln in the tournament semifinals Friday night.
