MOODY – Landan Williams muscled in for a tip-in with nine seconds left to put Alexandria ahead by two and Javais McGhee made a big steal in the closing seconds to give the Valley Cubs an important 58-56 area victory over Moody.

Williams finished with 23 points. D’Anthony Walton had 22.

The Valley Cubs (5-4, 2-0) staged two rallies to win. They trailed 21-11 in the first quarter and got back within two at halftime and trailed with two minutes to play.

“We were behind the eight-ball early,” Alexandria coach Jason Johnson said. “We finally started hitting some shots and doing some things right and somehow came out with the win.”

Williams missed the and-one on his tip in, but Julian Wright got the rebound. He kicked it back out to Javais McGhee who was fouled with three seconds left. He missed the free throw, Moody rebounded and called time, then McGhee intercepted the inbounds pass and ran out the clock.

“We faced more adversity,” Johnson said. “We were not getting any stops and not scoring and finally with about 2:30 to go we kind of cranked it up on defense and created some turnovers and layups and got back in the game.

“This was a big win for us because we’re still trying to get our feet up under us. Hopefully we’ll continue to get better and have a successful ending.”

The Valley Cubs played their nail-biter right after the Alexandria girls pulled out a 48-46 victory when Ashley Phillips hit two free throws with 1.1 seconds left.
