Alexandria basketball coach Jason Johnson was hoping his team would put together a better effort in its home opener than it did in the season opener, an effort worthy of the new floor in the Larry Ginn Gym.

The Valley Cubs won their first game on the new floor Thursday night, stifling Southside 50-37. Landan Williams scored 20 points and the Valley Cubs (1-1) held the Panthers to just 12 points in the first half.

The game marked three boys’ first game on the floor. Workers sanded the old floor down the base and repainted it in a new charcoal and ash color scheme with a 23-foot Cub head in the center. The Valley Cubs took the new floor right away, opening a 15-7 lead in the first half and extending it to 27-12 at halftime.

“It was nice to get that first win on the new floor and of the year,” Johnson said. “I hope it gets us a little confidence now.”

Williams scored 10 points in each half. He was 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
