HUNTSVILLE – Jamie Clendenin was a little worried that falling behind early in matches here was going to catch up to his Donoho volleyball team at some point.

It never did and, in fact, the early adversity actually motivated the Lady Falcons.

The defending Class 1A state champions fell behind early in all three of their regional matches Wednesday at the VonBraun Center and even dropped the first set in the championship match, but each time they came roaring back, capping the day with a 3-1 win over Lindsay Lane for the Class 1A North title.

The Lady Falcons fell behind by a couple points early in each of their first two matches before sweeping and lost the first set to Lindsay Lane 25-22, then roared through the next three sets 25-20, 25-16, 25-15 to win the regional. After dropping that set, Clendenin made a few adjustments and it gave the Lady Falcons a boost.

“It’s gotten to the point now where falling behind early just becomes something we accept,” Clendenin said. “Well, I don’t like accepting it, but we’ve kind of grown accustomed to it. It’s obviously not how you want to start, but if we do fall behind we’re confident that after we get to 10 we’ll take off and play a little better.”

“I wouldn’t say it doesn’t bother us because sometimes it kind of shakes us up, but it motivates us to play harder,” said junior hitter Maggie Wakefield, who had 11 kills in the championship match and 23 on the day. “That’s kind of the stance we take on falling behind: Instead of letting it run us over I think we use it as a motivator.”

The Lady Falcons (30-14) open the defense of their state title against the No. 4 team from the South, Millry, in the Elite Eight Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Birmingham Crossplex. Lindsay Lane (36-10) will draw the South No. 3, Kinston. Bayshore Christian is the No. 1 team from the South and will open the Elite Eight against Covenant Christian. Meek will play Pleasant Home.

“It’s awesome (winning the region) but we’ve got to focus on the next goal, which in the bigger picture is trying to win the state title,” Clendenin said. “I anticipated us being able to make it back. I hope we can focus on the task at hand. The last thing I want them to do is focus on the final and not get there. Our focus is to make it to the final … and once you get there your focus needs to be on winning it.”

The Lady Falcons punched their ticket to the Elite Eight by sweeping Sumiton Christian 25-12, 25-15, 25-14 and earned a spot in the region championship match by sweeping Meek 25-16, 25-13, 25-12.

By the end of the night, the Lady Falcons really had their defense up to their potential. Sam Wakefield had 23 digs in the title match and Naira Rehman and Lily Grace Draper each had 18. Draper had 29 kills and 50 digs in the three matches, Mercy Mangum had 27 kills (11 against Lindsay Lane) and Maggie Miller had 76 total assists.

“We played well, but I think we could play better,” Wakefield said. “We won the region and that’s great, but I’m excited we haven’t played our best game yet and we get to play again so we can still go out and improve.”
