Cardinals roll into regionals

Sacred Heart uses tight defense, big third quarter to rout Ranburne for another trip to the Northeast Regional

ANNISTON – Sacred Heart played tight defense in the first half and then stretched an already big lead with a 32-point third quarter in beating Ranburne 76-29 to return to the Class 2A Northeast Regionals.
The Cardinals, who have been to the Final Four each of the last six years and the title game each of the last five, led 30-14 at halftime, before erupting for their big quarter. They held the Bulldogs without a field goal in the second quarter
Eight players scored for Sacred Heart in the quarter. Cade Landers had eight, while Jarek Burroughs and Taishun Hall had five each. Landers finished with 17 points. Hall had 10. Delroy Francis and Jack Miller had nine each.
“We played really well defensively,” Cardinals coach Ralph Graves said. “Guys stopped blowing assignments and started really being where they were supposed to be and good things happened for us. That was a huge third quarter that actually separated the game even more.
“I’m just proud of them in the third quarter. Our young guys played really well when it was time. They all answered the call so we’re moving on.”
In building their halftime lead, the Cardinals held Ranburne without a field goal in the second quarter.
The Cardinals will open their seventh straight regional appearance against Sand Rock Friday at 7:30 p.m. The winner plays either LaFayette or Fyffe for the trip to the Final Four.
“We’re happy to be going to JSU,” Graves said. “It’s really good for our kids, really good for our school. We’ll just get back to practice and we’ll prepare. We’ll just come to JSU and just try to put on the best show we can and hope we come out with the win.”
