Cubs, Oxford in hunt

Alexandria leads 1A-5A South Super Sectional, while Oxford is currently second in 6A North; tournament conclude Saturday

Alexandria leads Class 1A-5A and Oxford is second in Class 6A after the first day of their respective Super Sectional Wrestling Championships.
 
The Valley Cubs posted 84 points to lead their classification in the South in Montgomery. Oxford was second to Gardendale in the 6A North tournament in Birmingham. Gardendale defeated the Yellow Jackets in the finals of this year’s State Duals Tournament.
 
Preston Jones (106), Kaleb Mathews (113), Joseph Lomax (120), Dakota Medders (138), undefeated Jaden New (145), Connor Norris (160), Connor Hall (195) and Caleb McCulley (220) are all into the semifinals of their weight classes for Alexandria.
 
Kaleb Shelton (113), undefeated Jakob Chisolm (138), Kendrick Young (145), Chase Hicks (152), Reed Hill (160), Keeshon Siaosi (182), Chanceton Holifield (195) and Kobe Shumaker (285) are all into the semifinals of their weight classes for Oxford.
 
The top four finishers in each weight division at each Super Sectional will advance to the State Championships Feb. 13-15 at Huntsville’s Von Braun Center.
 
Lincoln was second behind Alexandria at the South 1A-5A Sectional in Montgomery’s Garrett Coliseum with 71.5 points. Ranburne was third with 69.5, followed by Beauregard (69) and Weaver (58).
  
Wetumpka holds a slim one-point lead over Benjamin Russell in Class 6A South. The Indians totaled 99.5 points and the Wildcats had 98.5. Defending state champion McAdory was third with 94.5 points, followed by Spanish Fort (79) and Chelsea (73.5) to round out the top five.
 
Homewood is currently third behind Oxford in 6A North at the Bill Harris Arena in Birmingham with 67.5 points, followed by Fort Payne (65) and Mae Jemison (62).

Arab had 143 points to lead the North 1A-5A teams. Jasper totaled 119.5 points and is second followed by Corner (98.5), Southside-Gadsden (91.5) and Ashville (87).
 
Action resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday.
