There wasn’t any kind of party waiting for Kayla Broom when she got back to the locker room, but her Jacksonville teammates made sure she had a happy birthday out on the court.

Broom celebrated her 17thbirthday Tuesday night with a double-double, going for 20 points and 11 rebounds and her teammates made sure it was the happiest of birthdays by following through on a pregame promise with a 40-25 victory over White Plains.

“We told her we were going to get the win for her birthday,” Jacksonville coach Tres Buzan said. “We said let’s get this win for Kayla’s birthday. She played well.”

Broom had never played a game on her birthday before, but she celebrated by hitting eight of 21 shots from the floor. She was active right out of the gate, scoring the Lady Golden Eagles’ first nine points and blocking or altering five shots and drawing a charge in the first six minutes of the game. She also was credited with two assists and six steals in the game.

“My teammates pumped me up and since it’s my birthday they said, ‘Kayla, we’re going to win this for your birthday,’” Broom said. “When it’s your birthday usually your teammates are all going to pump you up, keep you high and always be by your side.”

Behind Broom’s fast start, the Lady Golden Eagles jumped out to a 9-2 lead that turned into a 10-6 lead at quarter’s end. The Lady Wildcats went ahead 11-10 on Lily Ponder’s short pull-up jumper, but Patience Carr’s bucket in the closing seconds of the quarter gave them a 14-13 halftime lead. Carr finished with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Broom started fast again coming out of the break, hitting a 3-pointer on her first shot of the second half. She also made a neat layup under the basket to start a 6-0 run that carried them to a 28-21 lead entering the fourth.

“We were going cold in the second, but she was playing aggressive ball for four quarters,” Buzan said. “When she’s playing like that we’re a different kind of team. It was good to see her be able to play four quarters full speed. I’d say that’s one of her first games she’s been able to do that.”

Korielle Beavers won’t soon forget his first win as a head coach.

Victoria O’Neill scored 27 points, Julie Cleckler had 19 and the Lady Falcons overcame three players fouling out in the fourth quarter to rally for a big area victory. According to available AHSAA records, the 67 points are the most they have scored in a game since an 85-80 loss to Sacred Heart in January 2017.

“We finally put four quarters together by playing together,” Beavers said. “We limited our turnovers and rebounded the ball to put ourselves in a situation to win the game. Credit to these ladies because JCA came back and they played well not to let this one get away.”

Beavers came over to Donoho from Faith Christian to coach the girls team, but soon was handed the reins of the boys team as well. The boys have yet to scratch into the win column.

The Lady Falcons (1-6) used a 20-point second quarter to take a 31-28 halftime lead, but trailed entering the fourth quarter 44-43. O’Neil and Cleckler combined for 21 points in the quarter. O’Neill had 11, including 5-for-5 from the free throw line. She had 18 in the second half.

“With having three starters foul out in the fourth you wonder what the bench would do as a coach, but they answered the call,” Beavers said. “I’ve got to credit my bench and assistant coach Desha for that. She made sure they were ready.”
